How hard is it for u guys with 305 auto tpi to hit 14.7-14.9
Im contemplating putting around 1,500dollars into my 92 rs with 80,000 miles.(slp headers,3.42 gears, hooker cat back, shift kit,) With all these mods i could prob hit 15.3 so i was thinking wouldnt it be bettter to just buy a 91 or 92 z28 305 tpi auto if i can find one. What do these run stock and what would it take to hit 14.7-14.9. Thanks for any help
Oh yea im looking to spend only like 6500 tops on a 91 or 92 z if i can find one with low miles. bout to get insurance money from first accident so i can go car hunting if i choose to not mod the l03
I WOULD SAY KEEP THE 305 that you have now put an edelbrock carb i believe 600 and the performer intake on with a decent 350 tpi exhaust from the manifolds also when your getting this work done you mise well throw in a decent cam . 3.42 gears are the best for what you want by this time you should be running 14.2- 14.5 easily could be better
by the way 305 tpi run around 14.6 to 15.6 depends on cam and exhaust

my 91 lb9 t-5 ran a 14.8 with a ****ty 60ft'r 2.25 a nasty exhaust leak a worn out throwout bearing and in need of a full tuneup....
theres no doubt in my mind that it has a 14.4 in it

also another thing is are 91 and 92 z28s rare to come across with low miles i think they only made like 17-20,000 total . I gues ill just look around for a month and if nothing then ill prob just mod the rs.

well instead of sticking with the 305, why don't you look for a 91-92z with a 350 tpi. Stock you'll be in the mid 14's no prob, also if you don't have your heart set on finding a 91-92 you should look for a 90 iroc. Again why do you want to stick with a 305?

well here's some food for thought, since you got that budget, how about you get a Iroc or Z28 with a 305/350 with high miles, you could prob pick one up in good shape for $1500-3000 just make sure that the wiring harness hasn't been hacked into then get a GM crate motor like the ZZ4 or even some other motor like that, and drop it in and slap on the TPI for it. I believe that all you would need to get is bigger injectors and a chip for a 350. I think, that's all you would need. Just a thought.

Lol, how does this go from wanting to run high 14s in a 305 Z28 to crate engines. bwahahahaha
Anyhow, as has been already said, A good cam 305 from any year will have no problem running high 14s, even stock a lot of times. Worst case scenario is something like my convertible as it came with small exhaust, 2.73s and is heavy...and it still ran 15.2 stock, and is running low 14s without much done.

With a failing rear end, really bad compression and terrible 60 foot times in the 2.3s my 305 ran mid 14s at 95mph. I had aluminum l98 heads, lt4 cam, coated edelbrock headers and borla catback, an edelbrock base, 3.23 posi. Now I've got a fresh 350 with a better rear end (3.42s), a better torque converter, and a bit better exhaust. I haven't been to the track yet. I really feel like I could have pulled off some high 13s with my 305 had I gotten better traction and had the engine and things been in better condition.
