Best starter mods for a stock L98?

My friend has a 92 formula 350.. he's stock except for a K&N air filter... He thinks it might have a chip and a 160 Degree thermostat... But even so, what would be the best starter mods for him? (best bang for buck)..

We think an Airfoil and an exhaust cut-out.... Anything else for like less than $250??

What should he do first?

don't waste your money on an airfoil...

where does your friend live? does he have to be worried about emissions?

you can argue all you want about what mods to do in what order, but to start off you should probably go full exhaust. headers, a hiflow cat and a cat back should be pretty good, and under a grand depending on what you get. that should free up some power, and sound pretty nice. from what i understand, a cutout would be better for the track...

check out the tech article about modding a tpi engine...

actually, here it is: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/tpimod1.shtml

edit: if he really wants an airfoil, i have one laying around that you can have for whatever the shipping is plus a couple bucks

Sounds like your friend just got it if he doesn't even know what it has. Best idea would be to do a full tune-up including pugs/wires/cap/rotor and a fuel filter. Don't forget to set the timing too, clean air filter, etc.

Then a dremel to port the plenum, holley FPR and a fuel pressure guage.

That should kill $250 and give you a much stronger than average stock L98.

Then you start thinking about headers and a cat back, torque converter, intake mods, cam, etc, etc, lol....

one suggestion i saw that i liked in your post was the cut-out. put it on and you wont regret it. awsome sound and its been proven to ad a 10hp gain at the rear wheels on numerous cars ive seen dynoed with them open and closed. this was on stock and modified cars. i have a cutout and i love it, headers and a custom made 3 inch cat back from other scrap catbacks, with the cutout on the i-pipe cost me under 100 bucks when people are getting the same thing for borlas for 500 dollars. but yes, do skip the airfoil. its a waste. get a dremel like ed said ($50-75)and learn to port and polish. then your mods will just cost you the time to pull parts off and put them back on. if you get good enough at it, clean up your cylinder heads with the dremel too for a good 20hp gain and hog out the tpi intake. port on the intake side of the heads, and port and polish on the exaust side of the heads. its a great easy way to give your car an extra kick for cheap.

He's had it about 2 months... It's not that we don't know what it has, it's just been kinda hectic and we haven't gotten into anything yet..

It beats my car though so it is good for at least a 14 second pass..

On a somewhat stock engine, what is the benefit of an AFPR.. ? I know it helped my TBI out once i started modding, but I don't really see the need for that on a stock motor.. Unless there can be a lot of further tuning done with it..

My car ran 13.8 with.........

Edelbrock TES Headers and y-pipe, gutted cat, flowmaster 2 chamber catback, airfoil, hypertech chip, MSD 6A box, MSD Blaster coil, 2,800 stall converter, Transgo shift kit, HAL rear shocks, and manual shifting via a B&M Megashifter.

It ran 14.1 with just the exhaust, airfoil, and chip so anyone who says they are worthless doesnt know what they are talking about.

Airfoils aren't worth more than a couple hp. Unless you get it dirt cheap, there are other things you could spend the money on, or save towards. For $25 the SLP piece isn't bad deal. Unless you just like spending money for the sake of it, i wouldnt pay more than that though, you still won't see more than a fraction of a mph out of it.

Aftermarket chips are complete garbage. This is not an opinion, it's fact, i and others have seen exactly what the aftermarket vendors change and not only are the changes small, but they are usually quite illogical too. For the money you'd spend on an aftermarket chip you can get the equipment to burn your own, and a retarded monkey could write you a better chip than what you'd buy off the shelf.

Hey Ed,

I'm a little confused here.

If you spend the money on PROM burning equipment, then you'll be able to adjust the fuel curves via pulse width, right?

So why would you need an AFPR?

Because you still need something to play with at the track.

dremel all the way. cut the bottom of the airboxes, DREMEL. ported the plenum to match slp runners, DREMEL. ported slp runners, DREMEL.

dyno'd 206.7whp thanks to dremel. thats 252hp at the crank with 100,000 miles stock everything else except a flow, k&n's, airfoil and the flow is necked down (3->2.75 and a crappy bend over the axle smashed to maybe 2.5) so flows like crap. if i popped out the cat and used a cut out i could pick up some good hp.
