ESC wire problem

My car started running like crap lately, so I checked the timing and it was way off for some reason or another. I reset it and that worked for a couple of days, but then it started running like crap again. I decided to go back and double check the timing, and as soon as I disconnected the ESC wire, the engine would barely run at all. My neighbor (which happens to be a mechanic), told me to start by replacing my plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I did that and it's still running like crap. Any ideas of what to check next?

Check the TPS and IAC motor. Most likely the throttle body and IAC only need a good cleaning.

The only thing is, while I have the timing light hooked up to #1, it's not firing every time it should. (Sorry if I misspelled anything, I'm a little drunk right now.)

Ok, I've had a little while to sober up. What do the TPS and IAC motor have to do with the ESC wire?

Has nothing to do with the ESC wire. Has to do with running like crap. However, if not adjusted properly, the engine will stall when the ESC wire is unplugged and can cause erratic idle and acceleration.

I'll have to check that out tomorrow. Somebody else mentioned a possible weak coil. Any thoughts on that?

Normally (I emphasize normally) a coil is either good or bad with no in-between.

I think I might have found my problem. The stator plate came loose from the shaft. If I'm going to have to spend money on the distributer anyways, does anybody have any suggestions for a good aftermarket upgrade?
