This is for all you guys who have the fast 305s. I have a 1989 trans am 305 TPI and it needs help, I wanted know what the best mods i could do on a budget. Basically what is the best bang for my buck? I would like to be sitting around 14.6s for now. Any advice?

Thanks for the help

port out the plenum and the egr walls right behind the throttle body, this will help it from dying when it gets to about 4,000 rpm, and its free!

If it's an A4 i wouldn't do anything until you get the peanut cam out of there. Not a better bang for the buck then putting a real bumpstick in. Even the factory L98 cam cars are a second faster stock. There's a reason for that.

Best bang for the buck is definately a cam.
Any exhaust mods will help greatly.

Is SMOG a concern?

I got dynomax shortie headers for $129 new at a local speed shop. Fit is great and SOTP feel is good too. You'll definately want a performance muffler or a cut-out too.

no need for cam or heads just yet, its called free mods, weight reduction and a free breathing engine, the firebird intake is a peice of ****, get an LT1 intake elbow and mount a K&N cone filter on the end of the MAF. do headers, highflo cat and cat back exhaust, weight reduction rear seats, spare tire, jack, ac, emissions etc... these are the things i have done to my 89 IROC and have a best 1/4m of 13.9 @ 97.08. if ur going to build a motor, i would suggest a 350, 305s are fun to tool with when in stock form, but are worthless to build up. 350s have WAY more potential

Well, I guess im one of the "fast" 305 guys...

My Advice, Don't waste your money.

Start rebuilding a L98 now.

Its really not worth it. Take it from someone who has done it ( and is doing it again with a friends car )

If you are really not interested in a new engine for your car, or just not anytime in the forseeable future, do all the transition Mods. Headers, exhuast, Roller rockers, ECM tuning, Stall Converter, Gears ect.

Then when someday you do have that 350 ready, you wont be kicking yourself thinking " why did I waste all that time and money trying to cam the damn 305"

I am leaving for Boot camp in Feb. and leaving the car to my father , he is currently building a 400 small block to drop in. I just wanted to see 14.6s or so before i left. i just got a set of 3.42s and i already have flowmaster exhaust.

I hope that you made the choice to join the Air Force, and not any of the other sevices. Otherwise you'll never see your car again until your enlistment is over...... I have cousins in the Army & Marines. And I also have a friend in the Navy. I am in the Air Force. Let me talk to you. Recuiters are not aloowed to lie to you, but they try very hard to "not tell you certain things". Shoot me an email if you want to hear from me, and I'll give you my phone number. If your going to commit your life for the next 4-6 years, you need to know everything, so your not regretting it later!
