1988 L98 buildup suggestions

I've got an 87 gta with an 88 L98 in it, the motor is stock but its got a 3" flowmaster exhaust from manifolds. I'm looking to get some headers for under 300, if there are any that are worth buying in that price range. Someone told me about 02 sensors that I may have to worry about, any info you could give me on that would be great. Well anyways, this winter I've got about 3000 to put in to it, and I would just like to see some low 13s come next spring. So any info you could give me on prices and parts would be great. Thanks a lot and any information on additional problems that I may come up with would be great.

Are you doing the work yourself or does that $3000 have to include labor?

First, I'd start with a set of free flowing headers. Edelbrocks are ok, but I think a set of Hooker Super Comps are better if you have the money. Next, a good set of heads and a cam to go with them. You could easily get into the 13's with a set of aluminum L98 heads or you could go with a set of Vortec heads. You can find some alum. L98 heads for around $500. Put in a decent cam to go with them and you're on your way. If it's a daily driver, you could get away with something along the lines of the LT4 hot cam. You'll need a set of springs and the hardware that goes with them too like retainers and locks. The best way to go about it is to get the hot cam kit that has all the goodies plus a set of 1.6 rocker arms. That kit is around $500. Then if the car is fuel injected, you'll need to have a prom burned so the computer will accept the modifications. Those are the biggest things you can do. If you have any $$$ left over, you can upgrade the TPI system if you have EFI on your car. Upgrade the tranny as well. Try a higher stall TC and a shift kit and a set of 3.73's in the rear and you'll be set. Sorry so long, but I hope it helps. Any questions, ask or email me!

i've already got a shift kit and 3.42's, would it be worth the money to get 3.73's? Also, what heads have I got on there now, I'm not real sure, it is a 1988 L98 350. Also it is tpi so what could I do to upgrade it? And instead of buying new heads, could I just port and polish the ones that I have now? Thanks.

I also forgot to ask, how much is getting a prom burned and who can do it for me? Thanks.

stick w/ the 3.42's. - are you doing the work yourself, or paying labor? - do a search on proms. I think most would reccomend Ed Wright. L98 heads ar decent, but if you want to go low 13's it'd cost you as much to get them done up enough as it would to just buy a good set of heads. - a proper head and cam combination is what makes horsepower. Deffinitely get a good set of headers. If you're doing the work yourself, then buy AFR heads, and talk to a cam company about a cam to match. Get a good set of siamese runners, a good base, and port the plenum. You'll need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and gut your air box. The stall converter would help too. - basically everything Nasty_Bird_'90 said. - have fun!

Yup Yup. Just as shagwell said. If your L98 is out of an F-Body, then you have cast iron heads. Either casting number ....197 or ....083. Both are good heads. If you're looking for 13's, you'll need a lootttss of work on the stock heads. You could go with aluminum L98 heads, but if you have the cash, go for a set of AFR 190's.

I would agree with everything except for the stall converter. You'll really only need one if you are going to race it at the track and are running slicks or drag radials.

I am most likely not going to do the work myself, I would do the headers though. Can anyone give me an idea on what the prices would be for all of these things? Also the difficulty of putting in a new cam. The L98 is from an 88 GTA whatever that is good for. What about a stealth ram or mini ram? Any other suggestions info would be great, thanks.

Where are you located? If you're in the MD/DC area, I can help you out with the stuff. I work at an F-Body performance shop. We do mostly LS1 stuff, but I could help yo uout. Let me know.
