Complete tune-up, expect any power gains?
Well the info is on my sig on my car. I ordered most of the stuff from Summit, and a few things i picked up at Advanced Auto Parts. Heres what i got:
K&N Air Filter
K&N Oil Filter
Gastrol GTX 10w30
AC Delco Rapidfire Plugs
Taylor 8 mm Pro Wire Set
Edelbrock In-Line Fuel Filter
Jet LowTemp 180 Thermostat (New Gasket too)
MSD Blaster GM Coil
MSD Late model V8 HEI style GM distributor cap
MSD GM rotor
Purolater PCV Valve
The old spark plugs looked pretty bad, and very rusted. This car has low miles, but who the **** knows when it was last serviced, so i do it myself before i start modding the car.
Anyways other than a fresh running engine from a tune-up, could i expect any sort of performance gain?

I don't know if you'd gain power. But i'm pretty sure that you'd gain throttle response and gas mileage. The car will definately feel alot better.

You can only realistically expect to gain HP if the above mentioned items were in poor condition.
I replaced my spark plug wires and my car ran COMPLETELY different. Then again I had two burnt wires (one all the way through)

If those plugs were trashed then yes, you'll definitley see some more sensitive throttle response. As far as everything else goes, you now have peace of mind and know that if there IS a problem it is unlikely caused by any of the items you recently replaced. Ignition upgrade with msd parts - 3 rear wheel horses maybe?
The ignition related stuff might add 1hp, max. They are more for being able to do more complete burns and are only really needed when your stock system can no longer fire the charge anymore. That is probably where they advertise their power gains.
The K&N might get you anywhere from 5-15hp. Depending on how bad your old one was.
You might not gain over stock level, but you will gain from where the car was last week.
IMO, when you buy a used car, the first thing I would do is a complete maintence service like what you are doing. You get to see how the car was really taken care of and you know when the last time it was done.

Thanks guys, much needed info. I pretty much figure i wouldnt get anything in performance, but like one of u said, i might get an improvement from what i had, which might be true.
Spark plugs were also AC Delco, but they looked pretty old, completely rusted, and they are about 3/4 inch shorter than the Rapidfire ones i got. Dont know the last time they changed them, but they didnt look to good. Still in the process of changing them, but when everything is done i'll post a new topic and tell u how it feels.
By better throttle response, im pretty sure i'll get that. I even remember when the engine got warm, response lagged, like id press the gas, it would attempt to go, then lag for sec, and then kick in and accelerate. This is after driving like 20min, on a hot summer day. Might not be relating, but im hoping the lower thermostat, and a future Fan Switch Control will take care of this.
Bottom line, im gonna feel ALOT better when its all done knowing that i did the tune-up myself, rather than second guessing if the last owner did anything to it, plus it gonna feel alot better driving the car too.

5-10hp maybe.. tour not gonna give it extra hp over stock, your just returning it stock hp. but you should feel a differnce when you drive her for the 1st time.
if you don't there was nothing wrong with your old parts, but you at least have the peace of mind that you have aresh tne and your not losing hp cauze of a poorly running car

wyclefsirocz thats exactly what im thinking, couldnt of said it better
Anyways im gonna go ahead and continue to tune it up. I still have 5 plugs to go, air filter is in, PCV is changed. Everything else should come in tomorrow or Tuesday, so hopefully by next weekend ill be done.
The PCV valve, i have a question on that. The old one when i pulled it out, i noticed it was nice and tight. But when i put the new one in, it goes in without a problem and no resistance. Is this normal? Cause i can very easily pull out the new one without any force. Does the car have to start up and heat it up so it kinda "sticks" to it, im curious.
LOL, funny thing to is i was talking to a friend whos an engineer, and knows a **** load about cars. He has a 11sec Grand National, which kicks ***. Anyways of all people i was suprised that he didnt agree with changing the spark plugs. Im like the old ones were rusted up and ****! Hes like oh dont worry about that, he said something about as long the electrodes go from here to there and bunch of other stuff. Hes says he doesnt even change them, unless he has problems, like if they fouled up.
I dont know that seemed wierd from him, cause i get alot of good info and help from him, but it was a bit shocking for him to be so laid back on tune-ups, oh well.

Ya i know. Maybe cause hes a cheap *** person too. The guy makes a **** load of money, yet is very very cheap. He'll cause trouble if u go out and eat, and your short 1 penny!
Some areas hes spends like hell, and in others, wont spend a dime if the world depended on it.
I hate that.

Haha, ya good point. In that case im never gonna be rich, i love spending. I mean i like saving, its a good thing, but now its like oh ****, let me just order that mod, i'll pay of the card later. Im very impatient, and when i see something i like, i almost have to get it right away. Enjoy life, screw being conservative, whats the fun in that.
