Timing problem

Hallo guys,
I just did an engine swap ( 350 for a 305 ), put on the TPI-stuff from the 305 ( with larger injectors, 22 lbs ) and a new knock-sensor for a 350. I installed Edlebrock-TES, a new cat and Edelbrock-Catback. The O2-Sensor is new, new plugs, new cap, new ignition-wires and a new ignition-module.
Now my problem : The base-timing should be set to 6 degrees BTDC ( right ?? ), but when set to this, my car isnīt driveable ( no power at all ). Now I played a bit with the timing, and even at 14 degrees BTDC the idle isnīt smooth enough. ( By the way, īthe harmonic balancer is new, too, so the timing mark should be okay )
My old 305 had a base-timing I guess about 25 to 30 degrees BTDC. ( I couldnīt rather see the mark on the balancer )
What the hell is wrong here ??? - What can I look for ?
Thanks,
Uwe

Did you unplug the Brown ESC wire when you set the timing on your new engine?

David,
no, I shortened Pin A and B at the ALDL-Connector with a Paperclip and I checked, that no timing-advance occurred while playing with the throttle.

Disconnect the ESC wire, start the car, set the timing to 6 deg BTDC (in drive for an auto), tighten dist, recheck timing, shut off engine, reconnect EST, restart car and take it for a spin.

Hi Morley !!!
Hey man, youīre the best !!! - Perhaps I should throw away the Haynes and Chilton manuals ... My timing was 4 degrees ATDC !!! - Now sheīs running fine. But the next problem occured. At idle, my oil pressure drops to the red mark ( about 500 rpm ). At 1000 rpm itīs over 30 PSI. Is this normal, or should I be afraid of ???
Thanks,
Uwe

Get a new AC Delco sending unit, not aftermarket they don't last a week. If it still reads low with a new sender, go to the parts store and get an El-cheapo mechanical guage and adaptor to hook it to where the sender is, see if it reads more pressure than the electrical guge, if it does, try to find a new guage (stock that is) if that doesn't do it your pump pickup screen may be covered with junk, restricting flow.

Morley,
go to the parts store ??? - Funny. Here in Germany nobody is able to sell parts for an american car. When I will born again, I will be an American :-)

Sorry, didn't even look at your location That could prove to be a problem you could try mail order from here
http://www.actron.com/cgi-bin/web_st...=2073364_27593

The only international places they have are in the UK and China, Might be easier to get it from the UK, don't know.
This is from the UK site, kinda pricy compared to the U.S. prices http://www.gunson.co.uk/acatalog/index.html
Here is one for 8 pounds...a little cheaper. http://www.gunson.co.uk/acatalog/index.html
