Question about Ram Air

I am about to make ram air for my car following the tech article on this site for TPI engines. I bought the 8" felxible a/c ducting and the zip ties today. The ducting gets ziptied over the grill openings correct? If so what do i do with the metal bumper that's in the way?

I would recommend a grill of some sort though... I sucked a bird up in my Ram Air scoop when I had mine hooked up luckly it broke the metal heat duct flex tubing before it hit the air filter :-)

I bought a March Performance Pulleys Mustang scoop for my firebird. Since there's no other way to really rig up a ram air on a stock firebird, wish I could just do the metal vents like a camaro.

Anyways I eventually took it off after that episode. I then started to use it as a transmission ram air cooler.... I mounted it on driverside so it would suck extra air up into dam area. A evil parking lot removed that from the car... which I left there cause I didn't know. But my GF managed to pick it up and bring it back to me... I haven't put it back on yet.

A simple change to the chip's DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off) settings will stop that problem, AT or MT cars both.

The metal bumper is in the way. While I custom made my ducts, the problem is the same. My approach was to use baffles to direct the air over that bumper support.
In the attached photo you'll notice an aluminum baffle near the bottom of the duct. This tucks underneath the Z-28 grill when it is installed to smooth out the air flow (this is a very simple install- use a rivet gun). I also have one on top that transitions from the top of the bumper support to the plastic nose cover.

Incidently, I took care of the bird problem by using 0.33 sq. in. stainless mesh to protect the opening. This system is fresh proto-type (literally just finished installing it last nite) material.
After painting it black (I'm not a fan of the brite duct work), I will be posting on the entire project.

Best of luck with your project-
S-D

I also wanted to add- I cut out the thin strip of plastic covering the metal bumper support. It was just getting in the way.

Black Ducting

I painted the bumper support baffles and ducts (inside only) black prior to re-installation. I like the black better than the original- too brite in my book.

Let us know how yours turns out 3gc!
