gas vapor smell
gas vapor smell
Need help, I have a 91 camaro with a 350. It seems that whenever it gets warm outside and I go for a long drive, I can smell gas vapors. It doesn`t happen on cold days. Anyone have any ideas.

check your gas cap, if its the vented one there is your criminal, and check the lines to your charkoal canister....

My '86 TPI had the same thing. Pulling the gas tank and resoldering the filler neck joint fixed it.
There's supposedly a recall for this on some years, but Pontiac claimed it doesn't apply to mine.

I have the same problem with my 91 Z28. I did some research on this and have found what LinuxHead says is true. There was a tech bulletin on the joint where the filler neck meets the tank. It stated that the weld/solder comes loose and allows vapor to leak. I have not felt energenic enough to crawl under the car and fix it so i do not know how involved it really is.

a technical bulletin is not a recall.
a technical bulletin is put out by the manufacturer to help the technicions figure out a problem
there is a big difference.

also when its hot out and the vapor smell is there, It sounds like the gas tank is purging itself underneath , it sounds like something is openning then closing, Im assuming to get rid of pressure.
If you have a vented gas cap start there. I would then look at all of your charcol canister lines where they meet up at your tank. Then I would inspect your fuel tank where the filler neck enters the tank. I don't think trying to resolder it would be very smart because of the fuel and vapors. Maybe some epoxy would do the trick. Hope this helps.
