need help my car keeps dying
I have a 1987 trans am 305 tpi with a 700r4. I powerslid my car around a corner and after i pulled it out of it the car died. Then on the way home the car kept dying if the tach dropped below 1,000 rpms. Ive had a rough idle and the tach jumping aroun 250 rpms or so the last couple of days. It has a new fuel filter, new plugs, new wires, cold air intake, oil changed 200 miles ago, cap, and a new rotor. The car will start once and a while and idle really rough other than that you have to give it gas to start and keep your foot on it otherwise it dies. After you do get it to move if the car drops below 1000 rpms the car will die. Im guessing its the fuel pump thats causing this? Would i be correct in assuming this or could it be something else? Oh yeah the trunk smells like gas really bad and theres a boiling sound in the rear of the car after you turn the car off.

dying
Sounds Like the fuel pump. Get a fuel pressure gauge and test it .
You may have ripped that corner and starved your fuel pump for a second wich in turn helped it kick the bucket since it was due to go out any day now.

305 tpi
It should be around 40 to 42 psi stock. at idle
When you test the pressure it also needs to stay there strong. You dont have to start your car to test it just turn the key to accesorries on.
Do you still hear your fuel pump prime when you turn your key???( the 3 second buzzing sound from the back of the car) when you turn the igniton power to on.
I have tested a few pumps before by just pressing the schrader valve in some cases after allowing the pump to prime and seeing if the pressure is strong enough to spray hard or just bairly trickle out.
Extremly hard spray= good pump
bairly trickle out = bad pump
But some times you can still have some pressure but not enough to fire an injector so if your not sure what to look for get a Gauge some auto places let you borrow them like auto zone. (with deposit)
