hey guys my buddy wants to buy a clamp on filter for his tpi 91 z28 camaro.. but he doesnt know ware to buy one.. ware can you buy one of these at?

You didn't mention what kind of filter, I'm guessing you mean the TPI conical air filter from K&N?



You can get it at Summit, Jeg's or local places. I don't know where Parishville is, I got mine at S-K Speed in Lynbrook.

You could run that. I wouldn't. Heat soak is a **** especially where that is sitting...

Oh yeah... DON'T use it. My IAT's are 145+, and it just started getting cooler down here in FL.

I'm trying to figure out some way to get it awar from the radiator right now, but I have no room between the belt and the fan.

Same issue with mine, I don't have elect fans and I'm pulling 150-160 IAT all the time (even on 60 deg days)
It's best to get a tube made and move it to some fresh air.
I know its killing me and needs to be figured out, but it WILL be worth it.

well he does have sual electric fans and he is still going to buy it.. and its a plus for me because i am getting his complete air box to put on my 86 iroc that i hit a deer with.:lala:

Electric fans have nothing to do w/ the filter getting heat soaked sitting right there above the motor and radiator.

I don't know why he would want it, but if has his heart set on it, he can get one at Autozone, although its not the cheapest place... but really, does he care? He's throwing money away either way

i know lol... any way i realy dont give a crap eather lol my friend isnt putting it on for performance he is doing it for looks because he has a very very clean engine bay and has alot of things polished and such.. so he wants to add that touch with a clamp on air filter liked piced above... and int he end ill get his whole air box assembly so both of us will be happy lol thanks for the help pointing us in the right direction to buy one at we found one in "JEGS" for $50.. so he is going to order that and give me his whole air box with K&N filter for 50 bucks... not a bad deal at all:lala:

oh dang, i paid $45 for mine from Autozone and didnt have to pay shipping. $50 + shipping is too much if you ask me... this could save YOU some money.

there isnt an auto zone around here all we have is NAPA and ADVANCED AUTO PARTS and neather of them carry it also it was like 42.99 or something i was just figuring like 50 bucks pretty much shipped for a big guesstamit...lol

Yeah I once I learned that, it was off. Too body no one told me it was a bad idea before, but no one else near me has a TPI anyway. Back to the stock setup it is.

Just curious, how is it that the guys with TBI and carbs see benefits from an open air - with stock hood - and TPI really doesn't see any? Isn't their filter prone to heat soak as well being where it is (I know the filter is a bit closer on the TPI, but not that much).

cuz on TBi/carb your going from a mini inlet, to a full round hole to let air in, and either way, its hot air thanks to that heater control valve running off the manifold.

You're doing the same on TPI, going from an intake base with a relatively small hole then it has to follow that intake duct. Doesn't help matters the duct is black plastic.

You're right. Us TBI guys do get heat soak from the engine with open elements, but generally it's just so much better than the tiny choking stock snorkel that most guys don't care about the hotter air. As somebody once said on the TBI board, "I'd rather get a lot of hot air than a little bit of slightly cooler air!" But, of course, this isn't everyone on the TBI board talking.

would a Ram Air hood help to benifit one of these filters, as it lets air in directly to the engine bay? I would like to get the ram air box but it's too much money for a poor a$s fool like me, but i can afford $45 on one of these.

You can make one yourself, just gotta do the measuriing and metalwork.

During the winter when the snow keeps me in I'm going to fabricate an SLP-like airbox instead of buying theirs for $70.

can I borrow a tig welder and a visor?
