Check List for TPI Swap
Hey guys, heres what I'm trying to do.
I have a '92 RS, with the 305 TBI. I also have a 305 TPI sitting in the shop. I want to swap ONLY the TPI on the 305 in my RS.
What are all the parts I will need to do this?
1.I have, the complete TPI
2.Knock sensor
I know there are alot more parts I need, so please help me out so I can get everything I will need to do a smoothe swap.
Thanks for all your help!
Kyle

Alternator bracket is slightly different.
Oil pressure fitting may be different if you have one that is mounted on the china wall of the engine. If your sender is above the oil filter, then you don't have to worry about it.

I may be able to offer a couple of tips.
You will ned to changfe the fule pump to a high pressure one.
Get one for a TPI Camaro and install it.
You;ll need a return line to the tank from the TPI fule rails.
May be ableto use your current TBI retun line.
You will need a wiring harness and an ECM to control the TPI system you want to install.
There are two types of TPI systems, Speed Dendity and Mass Air Flow or MAF.
the SD system will be easier to install abd get wirking. Both are pretty easy to tune.
You need to knwo which one you got though.
Your present Knock Sensor should work with your TPI system.
It's not too hard to change over but you will needto get pretty good at reading the wiring diagrams inthe factory manuls.
Get a manuals for both your car and for the carthe TPI came off of.
This will allow you to graft the two system together amd make them happy with each other.
You will need an auxillary? power distrbution center to wire the power for the ECM, the fule pump , the injectors and the rest of the sensors.
You'll need to fuse these things so you will need the power distribution box.
All that is not onyour car now so you;ll need it to do a goood job.
I used to get them from Painless and they for around 25. They made doing the wiring a lot nicer and easier.
I used to use those filters that mounted to thefront of the TIP system on the throttle body. Those cone like filters but if you can get the intake parts off a doner casrand get some cold air, that wuld be betrter.
If you can lean over the fenders for 8 to 10 hours you cando this withoutnuch trouble.
A good long weekend is more than enough time but get everthing reddy first.

Here's a short list
Ok, here's what I've done so far.
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=216453
To repin your TBI Harness to work.
1227730 ECM ( I have extras for sale, P/M me if interested) and 16151348 memcal
10066475 kickdown cable and 10163822 throttle cable.
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=262802 is someone who used a 2.8/3.1 throttle cable
I'm using a fuel pump from a 1989 Turbo Trans Am 3.8L because it flows more than a stock TPI and cost less... bought it at NAPA for about $45. It's better to drop the tank and install an in-tank unit.
You may or may not have to rework your fuel lines.
TPI Gasket Set, Fuel Filter, Strainer oil, oil filter, and since it's all apart, tune it up... see where I'm going??
A BUTT LOAD OF TIME. I cleaned everything when it was all apart because I had a nasty oil leak. I'm probably another week from completion of my swap... it's involved, but I got everything I needed from eBay, etc. for still less than what a remanufactured electronic carburetor cost me.

It was all the little things that kept slowing me down when I went from TBI to TPI. O rings for the fuel lines, cruise cable, cable bracket, Tstat housing, etc. It was a pretty straight forward swap going from TBI though, and well worth the effort.

Thanks for all the help! I'm getting an idea of what its gonna take to get this done. I also have the whole engine that the TPI is off of, so if there are any litttle odds ad ends I will need off that LMK. Thanks alot!

I have the serpentine already on my car, do you think I should swap the serpentine on my car for the serpentine on my donor engine? (use the serpentine off the TPI motor as opposed to the one on my TBI)

Rumor has it that the alternator bracket is slightly different... but I honestly don't see a need for changing it.

from the way it looks, I have everything except a
wiring harness, ECM and chip, and fuel pump.
I hope i'm not forgetting anything.

Here's something I used to have to do.
If you cant find a throttle cable and a TV cable that will work for you, look at the Lokar ?? ones.
If you have a 700R4 the TV cable is a kritikle (needs to be right) component of your swap. It kontrols the transmission perssure so it must be correct.
If you have a Turbo 350 the cable is used only for kickdown.
It won't hurt anythabg if it ain't rigth but you won't get gudd performance if kickdown doe not happen at when you go to wide open throttle.
The loKar stuff is fairly priced and worrks good to.
You can go ahead and do most of the wiring bfeore you start the swap. It's easier to do while the car is still running on the older manifole.
Just do a little along and pretty suon you will be reedy to swap them things over.
You kan use the charkoal can line that goes back to the tank for your feul return line.
The in tank pump is best and sense you alreedy got one just change it out to the high pressure oneand it will be gooud to go.
In tank is best cause the gas absorbz the sound of the pump and so it is quieter. You can use the in line pump if you want to but in tank is best.
You will probably use sum rubber feul lines to hook up some of your connections with so be shure it is the hose called fuel injection hose. it has extra stuff in it to handle the extra feul pressure you will be running.
regular feul line won't do.
Check your distribator connecter an make shure it will connect to your new distrabutar cause a lot of times it wont.
Try ans idenafy as many of the wires on the old system as you can before you take it down. Use masking tape and wreite on them where they go. wires like fule pump power, sensor wires and stuff like that.
It will be lots easier to put the nex manifold on if you do this.
Hope some of this stuff made since.
