Battery question...

Hello all,

I'm looking at the ACDelco's site right now... I have a ton of choice for a battery when I enter F as the engine. The question is, wich one is for me? In the description of some battery, you see stuff like W/110 AMP GEN, SIDE TERMINAL, DUAL TERMINAL etc...

How do I know how much AMP my alternator is?

Thanks!

I guessing your search results from the AC/Delco look like what I pasted below.

1988 PONTIAC FIREBIRD TRANS AM V8 5.0L 305cid GAS FI N Engine VIN = F
Qty Req Qty ACDelco Part# Description
ELECTRICAL / BATTERY
01 ACD75-60 BATTERY, 60 SERIES - 5 YR
BCI 75 CCA 0570 OPT. SIDE TERMINAL
01 75-5YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 5 YR
BCI 75 CCA 0525 W/110 AMP GEN. SIDE TERMINAL
01 70-6YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 6 YR
BCI 70 CCA 0525 SIDE TERMINAL
01 70DT6YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 6 YR
BCI 70 CCA 0525 DUAL TERMINAL
01 75-6YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 6 YR
BCI 75 CCA 0570 OPT. SIDE TERMINAL
01 75-6YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 6 YR
BCI 75 CCA 0525 W/110 AMP GEN. SIDE TERMINAL
01 75-7YR BATTERY, PROFESSIONAL - 7 YR

You have a 105 amp alternator and need a 75 series side-terminal battery. You could also use a dual-terminal type battery. There are many options because the warranties vary from 5 to 7 years. A 70 series will fit but it is not stock size.

So, the 70 and 60 series aren't stock size? I sure wan't something that is the same size as the original battery. Do original battery had side terminals or duals? and it was a normal battery not one for a 110Amp alternator?

Thanks

Where did I mention 60 series?

As I said before, you want a 75 series with side terminals if your battery cables are stock.

I do not know what the 110 A thing is about, since the serpentine CS130 alternators used on the tpi engines are 105A. I would choose the battery listed for that 110A though, since 105 and 110 are very close. The battery listed as for 110A should have the highest cranking amps in the given warranty range.

Okay, let me re-phrase this (I speak french normally sorry...).

What is the actual ACDelco battery the closest to the original one that came in my GTA back in 88? I wan't something the same size and pretty much the same specifications if possible...

Another question, do all ACDelco battery drip Acid? Cause the one I have right now does...

Thanks

OnFire,

That's pretty good. Many of us don't speak (or type) English normally, either. You're doing quite well for a second language.

Your original alternator is likely a 104A unit if the car has A/C and the usual options.

The original battery in the '88 F body would have been just as Jade mentioned - A Group 75, at least 500CCA. I would suggest you find the highest CCA rating you can in a Group 75 battery. An ideal choice would be the Delco 75-6YR-800CA.

A Group 75 has side terminals only, and has maximum dimensions of 9-1/16 long, 7-1/16" wide, and 7-11/16" high.

If you want a very good battery and cannot find a Delco battery locally, try to find one manufactured by Johnson Controls. They have one of the bettery battery lines available. Again, find the Group 75 battery with the highest CCA and reserve minute ratings you can.

Thanks for the good answer Vader!

My last question for you is: Do new batteries drip acid or does it take a long time before doing so? I have an ACDelco I don't know how old it is and it is dripping acid...

No car battery sholld be leaking acid including a Delco. It might have a crack in it somewhere. Make sure you use baking soda and cover the area with it to neturalize the acid. Leave it for a while and wash it all away. Bat. acid will destroy any paint it comes in contact with, leading to a rusty battery tray and surrounding area. Nasty stuff.
