valve cover removal

My passanger side valve cover is leaking and I need to replace the gasket, What is the right way to take it off? I looked on Alldata and nothing came up suprisingly but the passanger side is alot harder then the Driver side. What parts should come off first I have never done this before.

You might have to remove some of the AIR equipment... mainly the diverter valve assembly..

Yes... Plenty of people... To get the passenger cover off, you do have to remove the diverter valve assembly (this is on my serpentine-belt equipped '91)... Usually that is enough to squeeze the cover out once its unbolted..

Many years later I'm looking at this thread for advice. Ah nostalgia. 🙂 Do you have to remove the wiring harness, or can you slide the passenger cover under it? I don't see a way to remove the harness on my 91 GTA so I'm thinking it has to be finagled with and slide underneath (but man is it fighting me!)

I think you might have to remove that wiring harness—it will probably just be cleaner and easier than trying to fight it and then still have to move it. If I remember right, you should be able to disconnect enough to then have it just pivot up and out of the way...

Thanks for the quick response man....15 years later! Haha really appreciate it.

The back of the harness (this is the rear of the engine) doesn't seem removable, this is where the valve cover is not clearing the rocker arm for me to slip off. The other end of harness wraps under the car, might have to jack it up to see where that's going. Seriously though, thanks for responding. If you ever in Chicago I owe you a beer.

Ha! No problem! There is likely a harness clamp bolted to the rear of the cylinder head.. You’re spurring up memories here.. lol

Gave up for the night. I've been staring at it for hours, need to step away and sleep it off. Come back with a fresh mind and tomorrow I'll hopefully figure it out. I'll update you when I get there!

Re: valve cover removal

I finished the job a couple days later. The passenger side I had a hand from my brother-in-law. We used a zip tie to hold the harness up against the intake and with some finagling, it went in.
