350 truck engine into stock 87 gta 305
just aquired a very low mileage 350 out of a 95 blazer, question is will this engine with it's non roller cam and stock heads work well with my stock ecm and exhaust. The reason I ask is I also previosly put a 305 tbi truck long block in the same vehicle and it performed less than perfect, I get alot of spark knock w/timing set at stock and a little higher anything lower in timing and the car holds back severly. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please
I know someone out there has to have some insight in this matter. Any specs on cam size or valve size before I go ripping things apart would be great. Pretty new to this site so just a little help!

Welcomce to thirdgen.org!
You're in the TPI forum, probably not a lot of TBI'ers in here...suggest you head over to the TBI forum and look through/search, then post iup.
FWIW, you'll probably need a chip/prom programmed for the 350...somthing from a Caprice/etc, that used the same ECM that you have, just to get a baseline.
Good luck.

Misunderstanding
Actually my plans are to put this truck engine into my 87 gta which is a 305 tpi. What I was wondering was how compatable this truck engine with its flat tappet cam and its cylinder heads would be with my 5.0 tpi ecm.Would I need to put the larger 350 injectors in along with the chip from the 350 ecm and so on.Any advice would be great.

I see, does the '95 have Vortec heads or just 193's? You going to leave the engine "as-is"?
You're correct, you'd want larger injectors, knock sensor for a 350 (may be the one on the '95 engine is the same as for an L98, check your parts houses) and EPROM for an '87 L98. That would be a good starting point for you to begin.
If the truck have Vortec heads, then you'll need a different lower intake base to be compatible with your TPI setup as well as a little more work.

Nope, he's gunna have swirl ports....
....give me a momment to puke...
... okay, so while you have the motor out, please... PLEASE!... put in a new cam, and some heads. It will be so much easier to just do it now. The cam that's in the motor now is just barely "Out of round" and is lucky to be called a cam at all.

Finally
No not vortec heads. Are the heads that are on this motor really that bad compared to what is on the L98 engines.Yes I do plan on swapping out the cam for either a stock L98 roller or something just a bit healthier, any sugestions regarding a good mild cam. Plan on keeping most other things fairly stock to mild nothing too wild yet! YET!
Oh yeah are the MAF sensors the same for the 305 and 350? just curious.

MAF sensors are the same.
193 truck heads will drop of flow a little sooner than 083's (L98) heads, but untouched I don't think there is a huge diffeence...083's flow a bit better on the intake, and 193's flow better on the exhaust. A mild cam would know a whole lot of difference. (Cited from the TBI forum)
Keep in mind you can't use (as-is) an L98 cam, since it's a roller cam and you mention your '95 block is flat tappet
Edit:
I guess if you have the factory roller setup in either of your previous engines, you should be able to swap it over to the newer block and run a roller cam.

Thanks a bunch for the info. And yes I do have a couple full roller set ups from previous engines that will drop right in cause this engine does have the tapped holes in the lifter valley for the spider hold down.

If you are keeping the stock LTR setup, and are changing the heads for something a little more stout (ANYTHING, PLEASE!), a cam in the 214/219 - .490/.490 - 114 LSA area would be of great benefit. That's what I'd pick anyways, and cams are TOTALLY preference. One guy may say go bigger, another smaller.... I like those grinds for LTR's. Maybe a little larger with aftermarket base/runners, and much larger for superrams. If you are going to even think about using the swirlports..... I just don't know what to tell you.
HSR and MiniRams...... the sky's the limit.
