*Beep* 0 oil pressure
Hello,
I have a 88 GTA, 305 TPI with a digital dash... When it's hot outside and that I've been driving in the city for a while, I can hear a beep from the dash and see that my oil pressure is in the red. The engine seem to run no different than normal when it do this. It seem to only do that at a stop (when I'm waiting on a light).
Hope it won't cost too much!
Thanks!

I have to ask, but you are full on oil correct? If you are full to what the dipstick marks as full, then your sender needs to be replaced. They are respectively $12-$15 at the parts store and screw on with one plug for the gauges.

Yes, the oil level is it full. So what is the name of this part exactly?

I have about the same prob but I was told it was main bearings. When I crank up it is like 35# or maybe 40# then when I drive around it starts to drop and then when I set at a light it goes down to allllllmost the red if not on it. When I go it picks up a little.
I have also had people tell me that car is supposed to be like that...it wasnt like that before though. It used to hold like 45# or more all of the time that I can remember. So I know that isnt true.

He has a good point, how many miles on the engine?
Yes, if it is the sensor, the name will be oil pressure sensor. I would wait for more people to chime in before replacing to many parts, it's hard to troubleshoot over the internet.

Beside the oil pressure sensor, what could the problem be then? I will do the most cheap stuff first to see if it's better. Thanks!

It might even be you're oil pump itself. The relief valve adjustment might be too tight, or the valve spring is weak. The pump gears/cover could be a little worn, or the pump body's cover might have come loose. The screen could very well be clogged with gummy oil...
Of course, there's always the main and rod bearings...

Hope this helps you....

I don't here any metal to metal noise when it goes in the red...
So, Is the sender and the oil pressure sensor the same thing?

yep, same thing, just different terminology. Usually, measuring devices which send their signal to the ecm are reffered to as sensors, while a device which sends it's signal straight to a gauge is usually called a sender. I'm not sure if this is the correct way to differenciate the two, but it's what i noticed:
to the ecm:
VSS
TPS
CTS
O2 - all these are called sensors
to gauges:
oil pressure sender
trans temp sender
etc.
