Ditching stock intake

Has anyone with a speed density car removed the stock air box in favour for just a K&N open element? Are there any gains to doing this mod? also how would you cover up the two holes in front of the rad?

Thanks

The 'hot air' experts are sure to chime in but I'd ignore all that nonsense.

Unless you have some sort of serious restriction going on, and with a 305 I doubt it, you wont see a single thing one way or the other. I ran back to back on a MAF TA through the duct, and MAF attached to the boot off the TB, no difference in ET or MPH. Was a hot day too, with the car at operating temp. So much for heat=bad or no duct=more air. IMO of course but back to back identical runs are kinda hard to ignore.

I won't take a stand of the general question, but to take one back to back run on a hot day through a MAF car with NO OTHER data listed as reason to disregard the hot/cold air theory is crazy. The unlimited number of variables that could have effected your numbers is staggering

I will accept your reasoning, and I have no problem with your findings, but to give advice based on it isn't right.

Typically, most of us feel that it's better to have cooler air from outside the car. I have no proof or tests that this is better, but to me it makes sense.

What data do you want?
1:15 and 1:25PM at Famoso Raceway in California. 60's same, 330', 1/8, 1/4, MPH same, so on. Car was at the same temperature both runs. Do I need to post the timeslips for you?

when I had my TPI, I could feel the difference in evening air vs daytime. Hot air sucks, cold air = hp...

Car: 1987 IROC-Z Camaro
Engine: 5.7 350 TPI - SLP Runners, AFPR, MSD Goodies
Transmission: 700R4 - Shift Kit, Corvette Servo
Axle/Gears: BW 9 bolt, 3.27s
K&N stick on filters = pretty much unlimited hot air
Stock tpi is a little restrictive on built motors, but they make good torque with cold air.

I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I'm just saying that out of over a million thirdgens ever made, and all the motors that have been built, all the cam and head combos, all the infinite variables out there, are you suggesting that he take your advice because of two runs?

I fully 100% percent beleive you. That doesn't make it good advice. I installed a ZZ4 cam and forgot the screw in studs. I've had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever, and I check 'em every now and then. Does that mean I should tell people that screw ins are NOT necessary???

Didn't mean to come across as a jerk, I was just trying to inform OntarioIroc as to the rule of thumb advice.

Thanks for all the info guys. I figured that I am going to get the cold air kit from hawksthirdgenparts.com that helps direct air into the motor better. I just thought that the K&N filter on the front of the motor looked better. Here's the kit i'm talking about.

Does anyone have experience installing one of these kits. I would like some feedback if possible.

Thanks

Whats bad advice? Because I only tested it once? As far as I know, nobody else here has ever done a back to back, they just give their opinions on it without ever having done some sort of comparison. I'll stick to my own on that one. From a stock Camaro intake to a TB K+N, not going to matter IMO. Its still filtered air, and there are many cars running around with open elements under the hood, even around here with the carb'd and TBI cars. I dont see anything bad advice about it, sorry. I'd rather stick with stock personally, or do what the pic above has, but some people float in different boats. Now if we're discussing cold air intakes, well... different story. I know a local guy, only with ducts like pictured, gutted box, AND no filters (and that was the biggest change) gained 2MPH. The filters were 90% of that, filters in was bad news for the MPH.

As for my car I thought it felt faster, for sure had crisper throttle response being open, and then the timeslip said it didnt matter. Disappointing. I need to recalibrate my rear end dyno I guess.

Some local guys put in something like the setup above (I'm sure way before that was ever thought of by hawks), install wasnt bad from what I heard. You should know that foglights will negate much of your gain, and having no filters will benefit but I'd only do that at the track, and preferably only a clean one.
