Cam Selection Need some Help

I'm trying to do a little planning for my next project. Im planning on building an sbc 400 with vortec heads, SDPC base, AS&M runners, ported Plenum and bigger TB. I was looking at Comp Cams because thats what I have in my 350 now Im pretty happy with it. From what I can tell a 8-467-8 is about the biggest cam they make to work with a TPI motor. Yes I know it will need tuning, I have the stuff to do that. I just want to know if this is a good cam to use or if there is something better? I would prefer to stick with Comp.

well, what are the specs on that camshaft? i'm planning on using a voodoo lunati cam that has 230 duration @ .050 and about 500 lift on my TPI motor, just trying to decide on an intake and a pair of heads to go with it.

I guess this is the XFI cam, yes? I have searched a lot here and all I heard is good things about the XFI cams as they are designed for FI. I plan to use the 466 myself in a 355.

Yes it is the XFI, I was looking at the 466 myself because it has the lower rpm range and "good torque" I guess thats why Im asking, Im not entirely sure what I would like to go with. I want something that will still have alot of nuts off the line but still make power up high

Yes I realize a stock TPI will choke a 400, thats why Im going with the new base, bigger runners and TB. Everything will be ported as much as possible. I can handle having the motor put out slightly less than a stealth ram as long as I can keep the TPI look.

I read in a hot rod mag that Comp Cams has a program you can buy for $10 that lets you pick motor, intake, etc... shows recommended cams and hp / tq numbers... and also gives you the part number to order from them.

Sometimes you just have to take the plunge, I purchased an XFI cam for my 383 that is soon to be in the car. I cant waite, I think you have put alot of thought into it and done your research, now just make the decision and let it roll.... GOOD LUCK.

That seems like its pretty small even for a 305.

I also agree, you can research as much as you want but eventualy it just comes down to a choice.

In my case I think I will eventualy go for the 8-466-8 because the low end torque it more important to me than the top end power.
