Self Aligning? HELP!!!

I am getting a set of 1.6 RR, however I am not sure if they are self aligning or not. How do I tell if they are self aligning? What can I do to make them work if they are not? BTW I have a 91 stock l98. Any help in advance is greatly appreciated.

the area around the roller tip should come farther down then the tip itself.
if not bring them back or you could drill and tap for screw in studs and use some guide plates.

Hey, brian. Unless you know your heads, it's hard to say without looking. Non-self aligning rockers have guideplates that are basically a flat piece of metal with two "u's" ground in them to hold the pushrods vertical.

I haven't taken the valve covers off a SBC 3rd gen yet, do you have to remove the upper or middle to get the covers off (we have to on the V6)?
If not, just pull the covers and look real quick.

Thanks john. I believe I can just take them off. I have however found out that they are non self aligning. They are actually on ebay. Cheap ones, however only temporary. Maybe you could help me install when I get them. should be in like two weeks.

oh yeah, from what i read in other posts, I do need 3/8" self-aligning ones but I could use the non self aligning ones if I got some guide plates.

self aligning is ok on a stock motor. however if you are building for power i would switch to guide plates. also make sure you get the slimmer body rockers for the center bolt valve covers or you'll be screwed!

I heard that if you go to 1.6 RR that you have to do a little clearencing where the pushrod passes through the head. Is there any truth to this. Also, does anyone have any brand or fitment reccomendations? I have Comp Pro-Magnums on by big block and they work like a charm, but these aluminum corvette centerbolts seem harder to work with.

It depends on the head. Some have a narrow slot that serves as a guideplate of sorts and it doesnt leave much space for the 1.6 rockers slightly different geometry. Corvette aluminum heads have a rather large hole where the pushrods are so there's no issue there.
