TPI kings, your needed in this isle badly

Well guys when I bought my car a few months ago, it kept throwing a code 32 for the EGR valve plus it only got like 10 miles per gallon on a good day. So like any good owner would do, I purchased a new one and of course installed it. While doing so I noticed one of the ports in the plenum was clogged so I went ahead and cleaned out the plenum at the same time. In the end the car still got horrible gas milage but the light went away.

So within the last week, the light has come on and read code 32 two more times. At a stoplight the car runs really rough. I always thought this was because of my catalytic converter because it rattles when your sitting still, so I think its bad and clogged. Now I am having second thoughts because of this stupid code. Since the EGR valve is only one month old, what should I look into next in that system? I will be hollowing my cat here shortly. I just want that light to go away and the car to function right. Thanks for help guys.

I understand what you mean about the code 32... I replaced my EGR valve, EGR solenoid, and EGR Harness and it still wouldn't go away. I recently replaced my heads and the code is now gone, so I'm guessing it was something to do with the emission crossover passages in the heads.

In my experience, the rattling cat alone could cause your car to idle badly. Once you fix this, if its still idling poorly, make sure your IAC sensor is not clogged/dirty, check the plugs/wires/cap, and check for vacuum leaks.

I'm not a TPI king by any means, but I hope this helps

Bad injectors will cause it to run rough and get poor gas mileage. Take an ohm meter and measure each injector. It should be between 14-16 ohms. If its less, the injector is bad.
Also, verify you are getting 12 volts on the pink/black wire going to the EGR solenoid with the key on, engine off.

I would have never suspected the EGR system if the light never came on. Is there anything I can spray in the egr port on the intake to clear up some clogging in the heads?

First off...if your cat is rattling then you do have a restriction that will affect your fuel consumption. It will also back the exhaust up into the intake...or egr passages and could.....clog them up!

Every rattling cat i've encountered has just been a heat shield about to fall off.

Re: TPI kings, your needed in this isle badly

a clogged cat would make carbon build up in every runner, if only one is clogged, it could be valvtrain, injector, or something else specific to one cyl

Sorry guys, I meant that one of the egr ports on the plenum was clogged with carbon, not any of the ports for the runners or the runners themselves. So its not anything with the intake system. Also you can hear the INSIDES of the cat rattling around. What do you guys think now?

Re: TPI kings, your needed in this isle badly

Refer back to post #7. If the inside of the cat is rattling then the catalyst foam that holds it in location inside has deteriorated to the point that the catlyst is floating around inside. Sometimes you'll be ok and other times it will push the catalyst up against the outlet and cause a restriction.....not blocked off, but restricted. This forces exhaust back up into the cylinders which contaminates the charge and eventually backs up into the egr system WHICH over time will plug up the egr passage. So installing a new egr valve won't correct the clogged passage. Pull the intake and clean that passage out and remove/replace the cat and I'm pretty sure your code will go away. Old dodges had bad egr blockage issues and it usually was a siezed heat riser valve restricting the pass side manifold causing the same issue.
