Rough runnin tpi wtf ?????
Hey Guys Hope someone can give me a little insight here! Ive got an 89 5.7 TPI with A.I.R delete and headers with no cats w/ 118k.All else is stock. Car starts up nice,runs good untill it builds up a little heat and then starts to bog and get a surging idle. Under driving conditions it has lost some power and seems to go into TQ conv. lockup way too early.And when you come to a stop it starts shaking and bucking with the surging idle. I cant figure this out and its really starting to get to me! I got a code 24 once and a code 32 once,not at the same time and not recurring,wich is kind of making me think its the ecm??
Im about ready to take the Ford Hammer to it(thats my 20 lb sledge)!!
I have replaced so far
1. MAF & Burnoff relay
2. EGR Valve
3. Iac
4. ICM & Coil
5. CTS
6. Cap & rotor
7. Plugs & wires
Hope some can help me out here! Any info would be great!Thanks in advance guys!

I have this problem too, but I was thinking to blame it on the cat converter because it rattles while idling. I think its clogged and choking the engine.

Im pretty sure the timing is okay ,due to a recent top end re-build. Will check though. Fuel pressure is okay too, about 45 psi. I have no idea what could be causing this.What kills me even more is its not throwing a code! Any one ever heard of the pick up coil causing this condition?

Checked the timing last night, a little off ,so I set the timing NO change! Whatever it is seems to be killing my oil pressure.It drops pretty low at idle.Also I seem to be blowing oil out of the dip stick tube.I changed the coolant temp sensor also. This is driving me flippin nuts!Fuel pressure seems pretty steady!

Im going to check my timing and fuel pressure too.....my oil pressure drops at idle too and I get oil around my oil sender and I even replaced it. Sounds like we have a similar problem. I was thinking that my injectors had sat so long that they are trash.

-I would ck that biz of oil coming out the dipstick and sender. Is the PCV valve plugged or your valve cover breather clogged? Could be your getting too much backpressure in the top end. It would make the mtr act like it's constipated. I've seen it before, Joe

Im gonna try the o2 sensor tonite, as thats pretty much the only thing I havent replaced! I had ordered new injectors, the ford 22 lb-ers but when i went to install them the rings around the top of the injector,where the clips go that lock them into the rail,didnt line up right. The stock injector only have one groove for the clip but the ford ones seem to have two or three grooves and dont lock into the rail right. Anyone had this problem?? Maybe I need new clips also?? I can post a pic if you dont understand what Im talkin about.Sorry for gettin off the subject. Ive also been thinking maybe the distributor is all together bad causing the erratic idle and loss of oil pressure. Im stumped!!! Thanks a million for all the suggestions I wish one of them was the culprit!!!

You dont need the looking clips. The ford injectors are a little shorter than stock ones. You may want to grind down where the fuel rail mounts to the manifold. I put the ford 24s on and had them leak twice. If I had known they were shorter I would have used different ones. Its probably your oxygen sensor.

Im pretty sure the injectors I got are actually longer than the stock ones.I really hope its the o2 sensor gonna put the o2 in tonite Ill let ya's know how I make out! Thanks for all the help guys I appreciate it !!!

Well I changed the o2 sensor and it is running a little better but not much.I also adjusted the IAC after installing the o2.Idle is a little smoother but still also a little rough. It also threw a egr code today, came on for a second and went right back out! Still blowing oil out the dipstick too,pretty bad.Also still having an issue with the torque converter locking up too early.Could a bad egr or solenoid cause that??? This is killing me, the weather is gettin nice and I cant even drive the B*tch!!!

The Egr valve went bad on mine so I changed it and only the light went off, the gas milage was still terrible and it wasnt until after I changed it that it started this running rought trash. That could be the problem though.

I have checked the pvc and and hoses,all my vaccum lines! All is good! Thats why this is so aggrivating! Im leaning towards somthing internal,maybe a sucked valve or timing chain? Its the buisness with the oil coming out the dipstick thats gettin me nervous. Actually thinking of droppin in a carb and saying bye-bye to the ecm!!!!

Still doesnt seem like its "all there", but she's definitely 99% better.Now its time to wheel and deal to try and get an inspection sticker!!haha. Just wanted to let you guys know how I made out,
especially those with the similar problems. Thanks again for all the help guys !

I've never heard of anybody having to grind the mounting posts on the manifold to get the Ford injectors to fit. I don't have Ford so I can't say from personal experience.

i had the same probably in fact ive posted two or three forums about the issue... the dealership misdiagnost my car wrong on three seperate occasions... i took it to a mom and pops shop and turns out i had 6 faulty fuel injectors... the injectors were working but the solenoids inside them had burned up so everytime the car reached operating temp the solenoids would break down causing spurts of fuel (which explains the bucking when at a stop) i changed them out and problem no longer exists....

I had oil comeign out my dipstick before. I had a spun bearing . She didn;t last long after that . Also have you ohm'd out the injecotors.
