1.6 rockers, worth it? please step in

Hey i got a 88 305TPI. it has the self alighning rockers, i was thinking to get a set of Federal Mogul Stamped Steel 1.6 rockers to replace the stock 1.5

worth the 65$ ? will i get a noticible difrence being they add a small amount of lift to the crappy peanut cam?

are you sure the federal mogul rockers are self aligning? ive never seen the self aligning type sell as stamped 1.6 for that cheap

if infact they are id say go for it, either way with the peanut cam or the 5 speed cam you are gonna see an improvement. For 65 dollars you cant go wrong either.

FYI im running stamped steel 1.6 crane rockers on my motor but they are non self aligning. I cant tell you what difference it made since i dropped the motor in with a bunch of mods, but everything seems fine.

Wally,

I've been using Crane roller-tipped 1.6:1 rockers on my 305 with the "LA" (LameAss) cam and stock springs for about a year with no adverse effects. My research indicated that the power increase on a stock cammed 305 are supposed to be a little over 16 HP and 17 lb/ft of torque, but advertised numbers are always suspect. However, any improvement is an improvement.

Who is going to notice?

The tailpipe emissions will be just fine, and no mechanic in his right mind will pull a valve cover and see what rockers are in there.

87 up are self aligning, so yea it sounds like a good deal.

One problem you may find is that on 87' and later heads, 1.6 rockers cause the pushrod to rub on the cast guide plates since the pivot is relocated closer to the valve. They don't all do this, but you may find that one or more pushrods do because of variations in the casting tolerances. In this case, the heads have to be removed and machined for clearance.

Ron, Try calling SDPC and ask for Steve. He will get you what you need. Before I ordered my roller tips,I was going to go with the Fed/Mogul stamped 1.6 rockers which are listed for 87 and up.I was a little skeptical,so I called Fed/Mogul and they confirmed it.

with the 1.6's consider a higher spring compression. you will beat the snot out of your stock springs with the added lift.

I was the first person to actually install 1.6's on a stock engine about 3 years ago. The Crane Gold self-aligning 1.6 full roller rockers work perfectly (same as GM performance parts rockers). I ran these rockers with the stock springs for a long period of time with no adverse effects. IMO, its a great 'bolt on'. It can be done in a few hours and will provide a nice boost. Not only do you get the benefits of lowered friction (definitely go full roller!) you also make the cam *seem* as though it has an extra degree of duration.

Good Mod!

Gunning for NA 11's with the MiniRam II and Hooker LT Headers.
