Will this combo work?

Since I am on a tight budget, and know barely anything about performance matching (I know how to install everything, this is just my first muscle engine build up), I was considering the LT4 Hot Cam and the World Products SB-Chevy Sportsman-II Heads. Will this work with the 1989 350 TPI intake base? What else do I need (keep in mind my budget) to make some decent power out of the cam/head combo? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

i'm no tpi expert by any means, or expert at anything for that matter, but i believe the stock base and runners can be improved on a great deal with aftermarket parts. i'll move this to the tpi board hoping you'll get more help there.

Tom Keliher and I both have the same heads and cam as you are looking at. Tom's car has a slipping trans. and runs low 13s, 12s are very possible, I have a completely new engine, only had 150 miles on it when I ran it, with no posi and 2:73 gears, no tuning at all and a 2.42 60' time, I ran a 13.6 , I am positive that with tuning, I still have the stock 305 chip too, mine will be running 12s also. Many people will tell you that the combo won't work, but I know first hand it does. I have an Edelbrock base, but the plenum and runners are stock. If you got with the setup, try to pick up an aftermarket intake base at minimum, the -all stock- TPI will choke the engine and won't give you maximum performance.

One more factor on my times, I hit the brakes just before the traps, not knowing it at the time, but everyone watching noticed and I do have it on video. 12s are very possible...

Thanks for the info. How is the idle on your car? Did you get new rockers and lifters too? How can you use the stock ECM, the computer doesn't detect any sort of problem? Thanks.

Try carparts.com or performancepartsonsale.com for the best price on a edelbrock base. You NEED to get one. You can find them used if you look hard enough for $250-300. The sportsman heads are a good one, especially for the price.

Also, port out your stock plenum and your next mod should be headers/catback after the engine is back in.

The idle is very good, it sounds like something under the hood, other than just a loud exhaust. For any info you need on my engine, go to http://sc3gfb.org/members/jason.html

I have listed most of the engine mods. I have since swapped the SVO 24lb injectors for GM 24lb. injectors. The SVOs were a little much for me considering the stock chip. I have a DFI for the car, I just need to take the time to install it and learn the tuning it takes....

Where can I get a good deal on an intake base? Or, should I just get me stock one ported? Thanks.

As long as you aren't in a hurry, get one from carparts.com or performancepartsonsale.com...I think they sell them for around $320
