Re: "Peanut" Cam

LB9 auto cams were only used in auto LB9's, However Manual LB9's got the L98 cam.

All SPEED DENSITY equipped TPI 305s had the same cam in them. Auto or Manual, they got the L98 camshaft.

I thought the infamous peanut cam was a 1986 TPI only phenomenon.

Re: "Peanut" Cam

Why would they put a small crappy cam in a 350 tuned port?

The only 350's with a small cam would be the TBI ones in Caprices and Trucks. Those engines were for gas mileage on 87 octane, not for power. Note that the Police Caprices with 350 TBI's got the good L98 camshaft.

The "peanut cam" was used in all LG4 engines, most 305 automatic TPI engines from 86-89 (some 87 305 automatics got the good cam), and all TBI 305's from 88-92. It had the same specs for both the flat-tappet and roller-tappet versions.

But they did put a small crappy cam in the L98 ... and I don't mean the peanut cam either. They really should have put something like the ZZ4 cam in the L98 when it came out. Not that the ZZ4 cam is much better ... just better than the stock "crappy" cam.

Re: "Peanut" Cam

I've heard a LT1 cam swapped into a L98, is a decent upgrade, considering LT1 owners, and just thrown them away, they're CHEAP!

But, how many would you consider the used roller cam, still useable?? There is one on eBay right now, 130k miles, but only like $30 w/shipping, which is still kinda high for used LT1 cams, from what I've seen them go for.

I cannot say for sure if the stock L98 springs are okay to handle the lift of the ZZ4. But I would upgrade the springs just because the stock springs are so old, even on a low mileage engine.

But, other than the springs, you can use the ZZ4 cam on a stock TPI. It's very common for many ZZ4 guys to upgrade their ZZ4 cam.

But, if I were to "buy" a cam, I would look more at the LT-4 "Hot Cam", even if you chose not to go with the entire kit (and the 1.6 roller rockers). I know one guy who installed the LT-4 Hot cam (without the roller rockers) on his 305 and it was a nice upgrade.

Re: "Peanut" Cam

The max lift on stock 14101083 heads and springs is around .480" lift. Might even be .470" lift. The ZZ4 cam is too much lift at .474/.510". If you get the Manley 22410-16 springs and 23652-16 +.050" retainers you can go up to .520" lift. Remember to change your valve stem seals while you're there to eliminate the puff of smoke on startup. The ZZ4 cam should work with the stock computer but the LT4 hot cam will definitely require a custom computer chip.

Re: "Peanut" Cam

if all sd cars had l98 cams. and all auto lb9 had peanut cams. why are all the 91/92' lb9's that ive run on the street (when my car was all stock with ads chip) pretty much took them all by about half a car? so my question is this.. could my t/a have the hotter cam even with the auto???

No, it does not. All 90-92 TPI engines have the L98 good cam. Period. No discussion.
