Wells/Conrad SU-145 MAF Availability...
This has been asked several times, so I finally got around to checking with Wells Manufacturing Corp. and tried to get a list of retail outlets for their products. Most of their parts are fairly generic, and are no better nor worse than any number of other ignition and sensor parts you can find at discount prices.
However, for a few bucks more they do offer a Wells Gold and the Conrad line that are more of a premium quality. Among these parts is the SU-145 MAF. This is a direct replacement for the Bosch analog MAF on many of our cars ('86-'89) but shares many of the features of the LT1-style MAF, such as a thick film sensor instead of a hot wire, no heat sink, larger I.D. housing, and a single flat metal matrix on the inlet instead of the round wire screens as found in the Bosch units. Flow is improved and the survivability of the sensor is nearly thermonuclear-resistant. I have heard from some that the MAF does not mount well in situations where the OEM clamp had been screwed to the MAF housing, but most installations are identical to the original.
Since many have asked where to get one, the factory replied:
"We suggest contacting Neil at World Discounts @ 800-288-6728 or Chris at Ace Warehouse @ 605-342-4710 to purchase any Wells products. If they do not stock an item they will be willing to special order it and will drop ship orders directly to your business or residence."
Maybe that will be of benefit to someone.

May the force be with you Vader! Good info super mod. I'm holding out for the big ford conversion piece and 512GM, cant wait. Wells thick film piece is probably the best way to replace the old Bosch heated wire unit on most normal MAF cars.

Vader does it again! Now a MAF question...My 85 has the Bosch MAF and was built 6/85. Is this the 1986+ "fast" baud rate computer or the older "slow" one? When I run Diacom it works without the special TPI adapter. I can only wish that it's the improved version so I won't have to fool with the expensive MAF burn off module when it decides to die.

Thanks

You might be one of the fortunate few that has the late '85 TPI. If your ECM is P/N 1227165, you have the newer control and MAF. The digital MAF used on early TPI engines was produced by Delco Electronics, and the later analog MAF was produced by Robert Bosch, and should have the part number on the electronics package cover. The part numbers are 0280 213 004 (Bosch) and GM part number 14094712, and reads "Made in Germany".

Hey Vader... the Bosch could be used for either setup, either the 165 or 870. I know when my MAF fried about 3 years ago a Bosch was pulled out (still have it) and a Bosch was put in.. not sure of the part #'s, I can check when I get home.

Vader,
Are you sure about that "made in Germany" MAF?
Some time ago I tried to order it by the part number over here in Holland at a Bosch Service center, they didn't list it because it was a USA-Bosch part, made in the USA.....
(There is a Bosch sign and a number on my MAF,but no "made in Germany!)
