idle hanging problem ... still
i got a 1991 camaro z28 convertible w/ the 305 tpi and 5 speed manual ..
the motor is stock except for maybe roller tip rockers (last owner claimed) but i dont believe it ..
neways ..
i have had a idle "hang" when i push in the clutch to shift and when i come to a stop ..
i have looked at the "idle follower" and no help there .. ok the computer controls it .. i knew that anyways
i have allready cleaned the throttle body, new idle air control valve, new tps, new coil
mechanic at dealer said it could be the ecu ..
someone at orielly's said it could be a blown head gasket .. ( but theres no smoke)
many have said its normal .. no way its normal .. it sits at a high idle for about 10 seconds before slowly returning to idle ..
any suggestions would be appreciated .. especially if you have experienced this before ..
thank you

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
Mine does that, I think.
Then again, who knows if mine is running correct - it just recently decided that it doesn't want to start sometimes and it wants to get even worse gas mileage randomly, so I don't know.
It used to do that, though.

what do you mean by "reset" it .. ive seen something about adjusting it .. but i would of thought the computer messed around w/ it ..

Ya I think he means reset the computer, that resets everything. and I'm having a similar problem myself, but it doesn't do it ALL the time. how do you reset the computer anyway? I know you can unplug the negative battery terminal, but is there an easier way?

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
yea .. ive reset the computer many times and it allways comes back..
its been driving friggen awsome lately .. so it doesnt bother me much ..
i just bought it and it has been in storage for a while .. so i think it might be bad gas or something .. its been real good lately .. im on my 3rd tank of gas (i was very suprised at the gas mileage of this car) and ive seafoamed it and used another type of injector cleaner ..
im going to check my compression and the injectors this weekend ..and if thats all good then it has to be the ecu .. and then ill just put out the $70 for a new one ..
omg .. i cut down the shifter yesterday .. i would HIGHLY recomend it .. huuuuuuge difference .. now it makes the car feel like YOU are driving it and you know exactly what gear your in .. i cut it down about 1" to 1.5" .. ill measure the offcut when i find it again .. put it in the center console but i couldnt find it earlier .. but then i cut some new threads on the shorter rod .. and screw the ball back on ... it used to pop out of second and grind a couple gears b/c of the LONG and sloppy shifts .. now its rock solid and short .. truly amazing what 5 minutes and a sawzall can do .. lol .. ok enough of that..
but yea .. i think its just a very small vacuum leak, bad gas, ecu, or just b/c i dont have the idle adjusted b/c i dont have a working tach (i got a nordskog digital one coming later this month .. i pre ordered it last month )

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
i just bought me a tachometer today, I'm gonna use it tomorrow and test out some things. whats a ECU anyway? do u mean ECM? (the computer, right?) I really doubt a vacuum leak or bad gas can cause u to have the problems you have. check these things: the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) and the IAC (Idle Air Control sensor) make sure all of them have a good connection. Its most likely one of those two. Hope this helps, good luck.

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
O'Riellys Auto Parts has just about anything and they can order stuff too. they usually know exactly what parts go to your car. i dont know a whole lot about wiring so whether splicing is okay to do i dunno. check all your relays and burnoffs and see if they need replacing. i think theres one that runs for the ECM, check that one. and on the IAC, its supposed to but a certain length when you put it on, lno more than 1.5 inches i think. it adjusts. hard to explain how to do that...i think you just take it out and push down on it and the coil catches somehow...if u got a Haynes manual i think it tells you about that. if you dont have one, it would be VERY handy to have one.

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
ok, disregard my last post on the part that said 1.5 inches, its actually supposed to be 1-1/8 inches (28mm). I would attach the file that i copied from my Haynes Manual, but this damn computer wont attach it! so I'm going to type it out the best i can:
"measure the distance from the gasket mounting surface of the IAC valve assembly to the tip of the pintle. if this distance is greater than 1-1/8 inch (28mm) reduce it as follows:
If the IAC valve assembly has a collar around the electrical connector end, retract pintle by applying firm hand pressure (a slight side-to-side motion may help). If the IAC valve assembly has no collar, compress the pintle retaining spring toward the body of the IAC and try to turn the pintle clockwise. If the pintle turns, continue turning it until the specified distance is attained.return the spring to its original position, with the straight part of the spring end lined up with the flat surface under tha pintle head. "
i hope this helps, if the IAC is even the problem...

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
aight .. that helps alot ..
but i believe the head gasket has given out on me tonight .. i now have no oil pressure at idle .. and theres coolant in the oil ..
.. im doing a compression test .. then tearing it down to put new gaskets on ..

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
theres not coolant in the oil? then i guess you dont have it THAT bad, lol. is there black smoke coming out the exhaust? if not, it may not be the gasket....hmmm...maybe someone else can put out a suggestion cuz maybe something else could be causing no oil pressure.

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
i got it in my garage today and torn apart ..
first .. i must say .. have no clue how this thing even ran to begin with ..
the distributor had 1/2" of rust sittin in it .. all the point were rusted ..
pulled the valve covers .. omg .. 3/4" of sludge / dirt sittin in them
two of the coolant sensors were broken off ..
oil was low and watery .. the water was good but had alot of oil in it ..
probably the bearings are screwed ..
so .. pulling the motor tommorow, full strip down .. complete rebuild kit from summit ..
rebuild the heads, and clean everything and paint it ..
throw in a edelbrock cam, and the noisy gear drive timing belt (anybody know how to disable the knock sensor) , new distributor, 8mm plug wires, e3 spark plugs ..
and put it all back together .. and i wanna see how many horses come out this time
i swear .. i couldnt believe the dist. cap, or the sludge around the rockers ..

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
yea .. i seriously cannot believe this thing even ran ..
the distibutor has soo much rust in it .. i can barely turn the gear by hand ..
i got everything off today .. but i cant get at one bolt on the bellhousing ..
do you know if you take the tranny or bellhousing off to get the motor out ..
i swear i got 3 bolts untill this thing is out and gonna be cleaned, rebuilt, and painted ..

Re: idle hanging problem ... still
I have been told that my low idling problems could be from my bad torque converter. So Thats where im gonna be going. I gotta return my TPs cuz i know thats not faulty. Hmmm a new ecu sounds like fun. I was thinkin maybe a bad distributor or something. lol i hate how there is so much to try to figure out.

you're younger than me! lol im just 20. your pretty smart on cars for your age. since you started out so young, you should become a certified technician in mechanics. and there will be people definantly coming around for help on these TPIs cuz not many ppl know much about them...at least around here anyway. good luck with that camaro, lol. i'd try that myself but im hoping i dont have a problem that bad. id be afraid to mess things up even more.

i got the motor out and torn apart .. this motor is lookin forward to its first bath to get it clean and then im thinking of dumping some money into the motor whilst its out ..

hahaha. i really doubt thats possible, and it sure wouldnt be legal on the streets anyway! but if it were to be legalized, i'd buy that $hit!! but ya, go on and built that motor up while its out, thats what I'd do....i wanna be able to at least beat a vette one of these days lol.
