help my tpi is having problems

every time i start up my car i have to lay on the gas at about 2,000 rpm or it will die. and it as a nasty idel at stop and serges sometime very bad. am mean the rpm will go up to 2.000 and down to 500rpm on and off and try to die. I took it to some shops one sayed he does not have the time to do a long time repair job on the car. bullshit. and the other said its to old get rid of it and get a wrx. i wanted to punch this a hole. I love my formula no matter what and will keep it for as long as i can. so if anyone can help i would be happy.

Re: help my tpi is having problems

It could be your Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). This is what controls the idle. Any decent chilton's or hayne's should tell you how to set it. If not, and you have the factory manual, that will def. tell you.

yeah,I had that same problem once.
When I removed the IAC valve,it was full of carbon.
Cleaned it up and all was good.

Re: help my tpi is having problems

you need a 1-14th socket but the throttle body is in the way to remove it.

Re: help my tpi is having problems

Could also be the TPS. If it was fluctuating or giving a false reading it would cause similar issues.

Could also be a faulty ECM.

Re: help my tpi is having problems

I am having a similar issue...however without the huge fluctuation from 500-2000RPM. Pulled a TPS code from the car tried one out off the shelf at work (NAPA) and no change. I am about ready to tackle the IAC valve......This problem comes and goes though, it isn't consistant.
