Crap, just had Accel injectors installed!
My parents just had their mechanic install the 24# Accel injectors into my old IROC. The mechanic is now saying that the SES light is on, and that they now need a new Mass Airflow Sensor. Isn't the MAF that is in the car the same thing? It had no problem before anything was done to the car, why should it be different now?
Probably just running too rich with the Accel #24. Is it a 350 or 305? Did you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator installed to lower it some? What exact trouble code is the ECM giving you? I would sure as hell look into that more, since the MAF is expensive.

Yeah, what is the code? He might have just forgot to plug in the MAF or MAT sensor upon reinstallation of the plenum.

It's an 89 350. No adjustable fuel pressure regulator that I know of on the car. I don't know the code yet. I asked my parents to call the mechanic and find out what he's getting exactly. I would do it myself, except I now live in AZ, and they're in IL. I would definately hope that they don't have to replace the MAF, I know how much they cost.
Where can I snag an adjustable fuel pressure regulator if I need one?

Injectors don't make the maf go bad. Either he dropped it or is just trying to screw you (assuming it didn't have any problems before the injectors were put in). I'd recommend the holley afpr since you can adjust it by hand, however I don't know if I'd want this mechanic adjusting crap on my car.
good luck,

It is indeed code 33. The mechanic insists that nothing happened to the MAF, and that it needs to be replaced. Since I'm not working on the car, and my parents don't work on cars, I think they are just going to bite the bullet and get a new MAF. Where can I get one online for a good price? Mechanic wants $500 for a new one.
lol woah, a new maf should cost about 140$ and takes like 5 minuntes to install, better loook into a new mechanic or a chiltons

The first thing to do is check the connections and their condition. I had one of the ports of my maf connector that was not making good contact and it would throw a code 33, I just bent the little contact sockets back into shape and it was fine. $500 - wow, once again hard proof that crack does not just smoke itself. I bet if they go for it they will still have a problem. All too often mechanics say your MAF is bad when it is really something else, he is just reading a code and hoping that it's right. The MAF code is for any error in the MAF circuit, not just the sensor.

Every parts store in the country sells reman MAFs. The one to get is the Wells MAF (so everyone says) b/c it's supposed to flow better and last longer. The car should still run in limp mode even if it is bad. Just tell your parents to go get it and bring it home then when you get back you can change it out yourself in about 10 min. (assuming it is actually bad).

Delco MAF's are easily $500. Don't you need a new engine calibration (chip) going from 19lb or 22lb, to 24lb ?

Man, your getting Screwed Without a Kiss, or at least your praents are!
First on the Q-T get you parents to go and pay him right away and try to drive the car or if the guy really screwed you and did some damage then get it home by tow truck. But don't leave it there a miniute longer! If the guy says it is undriveable have your Dad at least try to start it and if it sounds ok then drive it home but don't let the mechanic alone with it, have your Dad follw him.
Like someone else said it should be able to drive home in "limp" mode.
Sounds like the guy wants to make $500 buck to me.
Second if the MAF is bad then do a search in this forum and the Aftermarket forum for WELLS MAF, There should be a site or place to buy one.
Third never go to that mechanic again!!!
Good Luck!

Sounds to me like somebody had some slippery hands when he/she was removing certain parts on your car. I cant see how this would happen, but I have had some experience with shops like that. Once I took my t/a to a trans shop because their freshly rebuilt trans was leaking, and the engine fan magicly stopped working. He called me and said they would be happy to take care of it. I said screw you and picked up a replacement and put installed it in their parking lot durring the middle of the day. Some people just shouldnt be working on cars

Yep, but I bet you the mechanic is NOT going to put in a new Delco! That's pretty much guarunteed.
$500?!? I bought one a year ago and it wasn't but $125. I did have a friend that worked at a local dealership get it for me at cost. I figured that retail it would be around 250. Man, that is one helluva mark up!!

You may have your problem taken care of by now, but I'd like to point out a few things.
The MAF you get from GM is a Bosch, packaged in a Delco box, with a Delco number.
Last year, GM retail was $411.00, I had a friend of a friend who got me a decent price on one from the dealer for 249.00 plus tax.
As others said, rebuild and others are available, shop around.
Also, TPIS sells NEW Bosch MAFs (or did last year when I was shopping) for 269.00, if I recall, maybe $249.00, un modified.
Now to your problem, it'd be kinda hard to drop the MAF, since it's firmly attached to the aircleaner..kinda makes it hard just to roll off the car that way, but I guess it's possible.
I'd do two things, check the electrical connections on the underside of the MAF and also check the tube between the MAF and the TB, make sure it isn't split, and make sure he has reconnected it to the MAF and the TB properly.
As others have said, no matter what you do, take the car away...if the MAF is bad causing an issue, just unplug it and drive it home, she'll run fine enough, then do some MAF shopping.
Good luck.
