L98 from 14.3s to 13.? (MODS/TPI)
Well I think I'm going to take the GTA out of commission for a little bit. I went to start to take my plugs out and my damn rachet broke on me....my only 3/8s too........Oh well, I'm going to go out and get a bunch of tools anyway so it dont matter.
Actually the reason I'm typing this is to get some input. While I'm taking my plugs out and checking em' I think I'm going to pull my runners and maybe my plenum and port em' out as well as install my new MSD box and coil. Does anyone have any tips as how to go about porting the TPI out???? I dont believe its very hard, but then again I have no expierence doing it. Also is there anything else you guys can think of that I should do while I have all of this taken apart. I was thinking an AFPR, 160 stat, maybe a new throttle body.............????????
Right now I'm have a totally stock L98 thats running 14.3s 14.4s pretty consistantly, and I would like to get her into the mid 13s (13.5 - 13.7) without doing any internal engine work. I know with the mods that I'm getting ready to do I'm taking a step in the right direction, but I definately would like to hear from some of you that have been there and back.
FYI, I'm going to be getting my cable for my laptop, so I will be able to scan and hopefully maybe do some burning as well, but I havent dug into the inforation that much yet.
Thanks

160* stat is a no no. I personally run faster with a warmer T-stat. As for porting the TPI out.... Search the tech/general board. Vader has a neat little adobe acrobat file that shows pictures and everything. Man...14.3 and you haven't ported the plenum? should definitly be in the 13's after the plenum alone...If not very very close.

I don't think that porting the plenum alone will net 13s, but with all the things your planning you should be there. good luck

I have an L98 with headers edelbrock intake, AS&M Runners ported plenum and other mods and my best is a 14.030@98 with a 2.1 60*
With your MSD ignition add a coil,cap/rotor,and wires...attack it as a whole..the stock ignition is a joke.
I did this combo on my 305 TPI ..it feels MUCH better up top!!
Turn yor timing up to 12 degrees or so...
Get a fuel pressure regulator..set to about 48 psi..
With the plenum, grind down the walls that are right behind the throttle body openings....also any obstructions around the runner openings...foil,and air filter with that.
I have a 160 stat on my 88 305 ..it works fine....I had heat in the winter, and it goes into closed loop with no problem.
BTW....that is a very impressive time for that car.
If it was a formula,I bet it would go 14.2's-14.1 stock.

I wouldn't recomend getting an AFPR, the stock setting is good enough unless you are doing major engine work, same thing for the new TB, and a good 180* thermostat works great. In addition to the new ignition parts and free mods, I would suggest doing complete exhaust system. Headers, high flow cat (or no cat if you can), and cat-back system. You can do all that for under $700 and it will get your car well into the 13s. You can also do all that work in a few hours in your garage.

A few hours in the garage eh Dan87?
You must have like 10 arms and a very cool work ethic. It took me an afernoon just to do the cat-back.
I'd shoot to get it done in one weekend, headers will suck a whole day down.

Well my MSD 6A and Coil should be in this morning, yay!
Ok, I have a pretty good hesitiation when there is a big load on the engine or when the Tq converter is locked up in OD when I'm cruisin' down the highway and I give it a little juice. I know its not the tranny cause the rpms arnt picking up when its hesitating, so I'm almost sure its the worn out ignition system. I checked a few of the plugs and didnt notice anything out of the ordinary except that they looked a little white, but nothing too bad. What I was going to do is put the coil and box on it and see if the hesitation goes away. If it doesnt go away them I will just go ahead and start with checking all of the plugs and then move to the plug wires (although those are pretty new MSDs). Do you see this as being the proper way to go about fixing the problem, or what would you do different? Also if I get new plugs, what would you recommend?

SLP HEADERS & Y pipe from group purchase
NO CAT
Hooker catback (AESOME QUALITY, i just got mine)
ported plenum
ported SLP runners
ported manifold
ported heads id get ported 305 heads if you got a 350 cause their 58CC compared to your 64cc..... also, ported 305 heads flow exceptionally well to! but with this you will be in the LOW LOW LOW LOW 13's.
