Tpi Running Extremly Rich and Flooding on Idle
Tpi Running Extremly Rich and Flooding on Idle
Can any body please help i have run out of ideas and patients...I have what i believe to be a Camaro TPI 5.7 1987ish in a Astro Van the converstion was done in 1995 in Florida then brought to England in same year.
It has hardly been used but was driven for along run 6 months ago since then the problems have started and are getting worse..
The Problems started by running a little rich and slight smoke on one side it would start fine and idle okay then after 3-5mins it would stall and have trouble starting untill the next day..I have changed Oil, Plugs, Leads, Dis Cap, MAP Sensor, Temp Sensor, Ignition Module under Dis cap, ECM, Fresh Fuel (a couple of 5 litre cans)....Each time i tried something there seemed to be no change.. The more i try to start the engine after letting it dry out many many times from flooding the worse it gets...At the moment if i am lucky enough to start it,it pumps so much smoke out of the exhaust its like a bonfire..The engine will only run with you pumping the gas high if you let it idle it will flood itself and stall and will not start untill its all dry again.
I have checked the fuel regulator thats fine, i have checked the injectors and they are getting there correct pulsing voltage.
When it floods all cylinders are wetsoi have kind of ruled out all injectors to be stuck open..
I dont have a fuel pressure tester butthe valve on the injector raildoes not seem to have much pressure when you push the pin in?
I am no mechanic but a quick learner and would really appreciate any help..
Sorry for the long thread..

What about the O2 sensor? My TPI ran way rich until I changed it out. Also I have heard that if you have an exhaust leak, the O2 will sense too much fresh air therefore sending the ecm a false lean signal. I don't know if the IAC has anything to do with it, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Check the resistance (ohms) on the injectors, across the terminals, should be over 10-12 ohms, and all the same.

So does that mean that if the injectors have too little resistance the engine runs rich? And what is the range they should fall in?

Hi Scout i did think about the O2 sensor but although it is attached to the exhaust it has never been wired up im sure i read somewere it is not really needed with my set up being a speed density with no MAF sensor...
Thanks any way...

Hi Yes i did also check them all at around 12 ohms..
Thanks

Yeah I have a speed density setup as well and unless you have the O2 disabled through the ecm, it is going to make a difference.

I would change it out and make sure it is hooked up correctly since it is something you have not tried. These TPI systems are very complicated and require the correct input from all sensors to run efficiently. If one thing is out of whack, you are going to experience problems. They are a totally different world than carb setups. Good luck, bro.

Hi i will try it but it has been discontected for 12 years and has run without it.
What i dont understand is how the engine can flood itself very badly from completlely dry in seconds of starting it, if it does not fire straight away after 1-2 days of not running it has flooded again.
It has clean sparks and fuel.
And when it does fire up it is pushing so much fuel the engine smokes like crazy.
How can it flood in all cylinders so fast?
With the ecm removed and all power does something have to be setup from fresh?
Any help is much appreciated...
Thanks guys

I have just read the when the engine first starts it ignores the O2sensor untill the loop changes over this rules that out as the problem is there from th start?

I did also replace the O2 sensor and re connect it this did not fix the problem..but once a new distributo was fitted the smoke and flooding stopped...
It still floods on start up now ad again im trying to figure this one out..maybe timing out or hi pressure on rail im just about to check these..

Re: Tpi Running Extremly Rich and Flooding on Idle
i will do thanks for your reply....Its been months since it was last running yesterday after putting pickup coil in it ran fine i blasted it up and down let it idle 30 mins stopped it started it ran it etc etc i thought it was100% fixed yet this morning i go to start it and it does not fire yet more and more you crank it it floods more and more....Could it be week spark? Leaking Injectors? or bad timing...I will check fuel pressure but i do have a adjustable one with screw fully out... Any help is appreciated
