Lifting out a TPI motor????

ok heres what i need to know, i am currently changing my oil pump, and i have to lift the motor an inch or two to get the pan out,
1. Can i lift the motor by putting a steel cable underneath the plenumso that it would be run underneath then hooked to the hoist, and lifting there, bad idea or no?
I want to avoid having to remove my plenum and runners, since i dont want to have to replace the gaskets.

2.Also where else could i mount the cable to lift the motor. thanks

I wouldn't advise that, I don't think the runners would survive.

I'd probably pull the end bolts on the intake manifold, and bolt down using your favorite homemade loop. Get longer bolts...depending on what you plan to mount in those hole to pull from...1/e if you fab up a loop from 1/4inch plate, then use 1/4inch longer bolts.

I always had good luck using opposing exhaust manifold bolts also. Just a thought for you. Jeremy

Or take out one of the bolts in the driver's side accessory bracket and put a long grade 8 bolts in it and put in another bolt at the back of the head on the passanger side.

Use the holes in the back of one of the heads, and one of the holes on the front of the opposite cylinder head. DO NOT lift using any of the intake runner tubes.

Not saying it isn't possible - but I had no luck lifting the engine up enough to get the oil pan off with the engine bolted to the trans, even when the engine was stripped to the bare block. There was something above the trans that started making *cracking* sounds I was not comfortable with, so I stopped. I just needed to replace the oilpan gasket though, so I bought a one-piece rubber gasket and just slipped it over the pan. That way I didn' need to take it all the way down...

All Im saying is just be careful when jacking it up with all the stuff in. You will for sure have to lift out the distributor though..

From: pgh,pa,
well i put the oil pump and a new gasket on today, didnt have to remove the distributor, just the two motor mount bolts and the one that holds the trans to the crossmember. after that the motor lifted up just fine, i also installed some headers while i was at it

About the Power Steering bracket setup for your V-belt system:

That bracket system will come apart and allow you to have just the power steering pump and it's bracket on the engine. The non-A/C car bracket will be a little different and cleaner looking (if you can find one) but you can get all of the A/C bracketry off if you take your time and examine how each bracket is bolted together. I can't remember the exact parts that need to be removed or the order in which they need to be removed, but if you look at the pics of my engine bay at my website, you might be able to get ideas on what to do. The link is in my sig.

Good Luck!
