from 87 auto lb9 to 89 l98cam worth the trouble

My 87 has the smallest duration and lift made for these cars but the lsa is 109... .... Im porting the intake and swapping to a rebuilt set of 601 heads. I have a l98 cam laying around thats 207/213...415/.430 but with 117lsa. is that cam going to give a very noticable difference in the powerband compared to my 179/194...350/.384 with its 109lsa. or will the tight lobe seperation in the little cam offset the extra duration and lift?

I don't think that the tighter lobe separation of the smaller cam is going to do enough to offset that kind of a difference in lift and duration. You will probably feel a significant difference between the two cams.

You can pick up a better LT1 or stock LT4 cam for next to nothing, and works better.

I have the l98 cam laying around so it wont cost me anything,,, I just sold a xe258 that would have been good but my milled 601 heads only take .470 lift. do you think the l98 cam will make a noticable difference. also Im installing 1.6 roller tip rockers with the 601 heads.

I also have some 1.6rtr that will give me just as much lift as an lt1 cam but itll have a little more duration with the l98 cam..

That L98 cam should be worth a solid 25hp over the small 305 cam.

25hp would be worth it in my eyes,,, plus the heads, headers, ported tpi intake and new rear end 3.42 instead of my 2.73... It should be a pretty noticeable difference..

I am not saying you will get 25 as a result of just the cam, but for sure with good heads and breathing you will surely be giving up at least 25hp by using the smaller cam with your new set-up. Change it for sure.

Are you sure you have the 179/194 peanut cam in your car now?

I have a 1987 trans am 305 tpi with an automatic... and the thing has a lopey idle as far as these cars go... grant it theres no muffler on it ..... which would be explained by the 109 lsa on the peanut cam.

Trust me, 109 LSA isnt enough to make up for the tiny duration of the peanut cam.

Re: from 87 auto lb9 to 89 l98cam worth the trouble

How exactly is putting in a free cam that has good duration for a 305 and will bring my lift up to almost the max before needed guides milled down a waste? My question wasnt really if the cam specs as far as dur and lift where a good upgrade because I already know they are ...period... my question ( that kevin answered, thanks) was is the tight lsa enough to offset the difference in dur and lift. In fact with the 1.6 rockers itll be at the same lift as the lt1 cam and have a little more duration with the same lsa.

Re: from 87 auto lb9 to 89 l98cam worth the trouble

seriously, you cant possibly be this big of a jerk ***, I wasnt sure if the tight lsa would be worth as much as the extra L&D. thats what I wanted to know. Were you picked on in high school or something? Either way I think youre really cool for being so condescending...
