need to find a fuel pressure regulator

I recently bought a complete TPI unit from a '91 Z28 to convert my 305 TBI, to TPI, and later on be swapped to a 350 once the motor is complete.

I'm about to order a Walbro 255lph fuel pump and replace all the rubber hoses with high pressure lines, but my question here is concerning the fuel pressure regulator.

My TPI unit came without a FPR, I need to find one.

Most I have found so far are only the cap, but do not include the base. I need the complete unit.

Any links for one I can find online, or will I need to go search the bone yard?

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

Yeah I looked around but all I could find was the adjustable cap that goes on the stock FPR base, I need the whole thing.

Closest I could find was this, Edelbrock 3597:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

It says that it only works with the edelbrock EFI systems though, but it looks like it would fit?

Also would you recommend a LT1 or a ZZ4 camshaft? Motor is a 70's 350 iron block (will be getting retrofit roller lifters), stock rebuilt bottom end, forged flat top pistons, 59cc aluminum Bow-Tie heads (2.08 intake, 1.6 exhaust), stock '91 TPI intake.

Also, these bow-tie heads I have do not have EGR passages, I assume I can pull EGR from the exhaust header? I have the Camaro style TPI base though, not the corvette, can I just drill and tap a hole in the manifold to gain access to the EGR passage?

build your own... thats what I did... just tap a hole in the top and put a nut on a short but long enough screw and put it in... adjust accordingly

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

The base is part of the fuel rail.
Do you need the diaphragm?
Summit and Jegs sell the cap and diaphragm.

yeah ruiner, this guy is totally correct on making your own. There is a thread here about it with good directions.
I would try the local autoparts stores for the diaphram, and if you need a stock cover to make your own adj. one,you can have my old stock one.I'll mail it to ya.

I bought the bbk one from summit and was so dissapointed to find that all I got was a cover with a screw in the middle of it for $60!
I could have done the same thing to my stock one for FREE!!!!

Oh well,lesson learned.

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

Yeah what I'm saying is I don't have the block that the diaphragm and cover bolt to.

When I bought the TPI unit it came with the fuel rails and all that, but there is an empty space at the back of the rails where the FPR should go. Looks like it bolts to the passenger side rail, then there is a hose going to the driver's rail, and another to the chassis return line

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

You have free air between the rails at the back?
Why would somebody remove it....
Oh the idiocy!

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

what's the big deal, is it really that hard to find?

looks like a fairly straight forward install

if all else fails I'll try to pull one at the bone yard

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

Ok, I understand now.

The piece is discontinued, GM Parts basically told me I was screwed, looks like that Edelbrock part I linked above is close, but not quite. Going to be very hard to find at a boneyard.

Well it looks like I could just make some sort of line that barely fits over the O-ring on the back of the passenger side rail, and connects to the short piece of line coming out of the driver side rail with some high pressure fuel hose. Then, use a universal FPR mounted in the engine compartment somewhere.

Would that work, or does the TPI system require fuel to constantly flow through the rails in the stock setup? (fuel goes in one side, return line is on the other side of the rail, so there is constant flow even with no injector pulses) In that case I could replace the stock FPR base with some sort of "T" fitting then connect this in series with an external FPR

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

I was planning to start my HSR swap tomorrow. I'll sell my rails with adjustable regulator (fresh diaphram and free quarter ) for $65 shipped in the 48. I also put fresh o-rings in the rails before I did the TPI swap on my Monte about three years ago.

Re: need to find a fuel pressure regulator

i kept reading this and realized you are all out of california. here it is illegal to have a fuel pressure regulator on the engine. not sure why but i think it has to do with being able to change the smog readings by increasing the fuel pressure for power and then bringing it down for the smog test.
not sure where the code section is but i remember a chp and i discussing it during a trial i was doing for a client.
