VSS?

I have an 85 Z28, 305 non computer controlled, converting to a 350 TPI. What VSS will I need to use? I have a T5 tranny.

I'm unfamiliar with TPI. That said, since you're using the OE cluster (where the VSS is located) and since your speedo is cable driven, why would you have to do anything?

If you're going to use the 1227165 TPI ECM (86-89), then you'll use the 2,000 pulse per mile signal from the instrument cluster. Or, you can use Painless 60115.

If you're going to use the 1227730 TPI ECM (90-92), then you'll use the 2,000 pulse per mile signal from the instrument cluster to the ECM at pin C6 (you won't see this in the service manual schematics) and then change the calibration in the PROM to use an optical type sensor. Or, you can use Painless 60116 to pins A9 and A10.

Thanks S10. Are you saying (hey, I'm a noob to the whole ECM and/or TPI business) that if the OP uses an ECM from an 86-89, he's essentially good to go?

Another question: There were, of course, TPI's in 85. Is the ECM different for that year?

OP??

Yes, the 1985 ECM is unique (and highly undesirable).

As far as capabilities of the ECM, yes.

From a wiring standpoint, his car won't simply accept a TPI harness from any Camaro/Firebird. Not even a 1985 TPI harness. He will need a custom, stand alone type, engine harness or build/modify his own.

Very informative, thank you--don't think I'll be swapping anytime soon .

Re: VSS?

Yeah i have to build my own harness, as i really only need a standalone system. I'll be using the 7730 ECM.

So I have a small vss box on the back of my speedo, your saying I can tap this to the ECM to get the signal?

Re: VSS?

what is the exact wire from the 85 speedo VSS box that I need to splice into? I want to get all my ducks in a row so I get it right the first time. I'm about to break in a motor on a never tuned TPI engine.
