Running really cool

Are there negative side effects from an engine running extremely cool?

Excessive engine wear and bad fuel consumption for one

Re: Running really cool

Yes. If the oil doesn't get above the boiling point of water and stay there long enough, water will stay trapped in the oil and form acids and sludge. Water vapor is a product of combustion.

That's why it's also important when infrequently starting up a car (while in storage, etc.) to let it run long enough for the oil to reach temp.

it will also run rich because the computer thinks it's still warming up.

Re: Running really cool

What is a typical cause of this besides the thermostat sticking open. I'm pretty sure that's not my issue because it's pretty new.

Re: Running really cool

How are you determining that it's running too cool?

Re: Running really cool

it sounds like a bad thermostat to me. I've also seen it not seal correctly and let coolant by. Also if you're not firing on all cylinders it will do that too. My car was only running on 6 and it never got above 120 because the empty cylinders were acting like an air cooler. Car should run REALLY rough if that's what's going on

Right now my tempature gauge on my dash. I don't have an infrared thermometer to check right now. I'm guessing like most things on my car, the temp gauge is prone to failure? And my car isn't running rough, if this information is any helpful.

Re: Running really cool

That wavy thing with the pointer on your dash provides no accurate information on the actual state of nature at the end of its sensor.
