Want to put 350 TPI in my '91 Firebird Vert.
I have a '91 Firebird convertible that I just bought. It has the 3.1L V6 in it. I want to swap with a same generation 350 TPI engine. Are there any pointers out there that can help me do this the right way. I am new to engine work, and want to do it right as its my daily driver. Should I start with a short block and build up from there. Should I try to find one out of another 3rd gen. If so what do I need to look for to match up to my '91 V6.
Thanks in advance for your help. This website rocks!!!!

That is going to take some work. Need new engine wiring harness, ecm, exhaust, fuel pump and a host of odds and ends. Maybe even a new transmission/rebuild. I don't think the V6 auto has the same number of clutch pads as a V8. Just a whole list of things to think about.

Is there another swap that would be easier? I like the idea of keeping the 3rd gen engine in the car. Staying with the TPI instead of the LSX. I understand that it wont be super easy or inexpensive. I just want to make sure its the right thing to do. If the LS1 swap is better, I just found a newly rebuilt one out of a '93 vette that I can get for $800.
thanks,

twin turbo your 6. Might even be cheaper. Or do a LS1 swap. You can find one from a wrecked fourth gen.

You can read up on the V6 forum... What you'll find out is the V6 is really a dog short of expensive modifications. Next hit up the engine swap forum... What you'll find out is that any V8 swap is going to involve so many parts you'll practically need a running parts car to do the job.
One of the reasons LS1 swaps are so popular is because they really don't require much more effort then a TPI swap. Also there are more mechanically sound, used, LS1 donors out there then TPI donors. Most 82-92 drivetrains are worn out. By the time you get done rebuilding an 87-92 L98 and the 700R4 to go with it, you'll spend as much as you would on a used LS1. Better yet the LS1 will almost definitely perform better.

If this a daily driver your first step would be to make sure you have a way around town ya know school/work/home that sort of thing cause this will more than likely take more than a weekend.

I would think that the amount of money it would take to do that conversion you could hunt down a decent third gen with a 350 already in it and keep the vert the way it is.
