TBI to TPI

Ok so I'm swapping from TBI to TPI. My car is a '91 305 tbi and the donor that I ripped the parts off of was an 87 305 tpi (but we are not sure if motor was the originia, guy said it had been replaced, looked stock to me though)
I have from the TPI donor:

Upper Plenum assembly
Manifold
Fuel rail
Metal fuel lines off the rail
TB
Computer
some other main chipboard (not sure what its called)
complete Engine harness
Valve covers
Heads

I might have a couple other misc parts that aren't coming to my mind atm.

What I am wondering is will I be able to directly swap these parts into my car without too much hassel? Do I have all the parts that I need? Oh and I have the TPI fuel pump already installed in my car.

I know I could have done a search but frankly the Search feature has a bad return and didnt offer anything helpful. So if your going to post "Just do a search" please don't waste my time and yours, thank you.

Re: TBI to TPI

Truthfully you're not gaining much from this swap. Side stepping is more like it. Take it from a guy that has BOTH TBI and TPI. My 305 TBI car is easily a mid 13 second car with the STOCK tbi unit. It just takes a little finesse and just a touch of patience. Either way you're going to need to spend quite a bit of cash just to do this swap when your money could be easily spent on actually making the car faster. Just read my cardomain, I've covered much of what you'll need there.

Re: TBI to TPI

I think in 91 the engine harness and body harness are all in one. 87 had a engine separate harness. The swap may not be that easy due to that fact. However, if you really want to do it I know street and performance makes an interface harness that takes all the guess work out of it and turns it into a simple job.

Also, you make a tbi car perform. May add an L31 350 Vortec motor for 2k with 255 hp, gears, exhaust, convertor, and you will be in the mid to low 13's no problem.

Re: TBI to TPI

I would say plan for $600-$800 or so. You are bound to have bad sensors, injectors, so get ready for it. You will want to put a new pump in the tank. Would not want to spend all the time to put a used pump in the tank. You wont really get a lot of HP from the swap. You will get tons to torque though.

Re: TBI to TPI

Really 600-800? All the sensors are working and so are the injectors, the car I took the TPI off of was running fantastic when we pulled it, was only pulled because we were told it was a 350, when it turned out to be a 305 I decided to pull the TPI stuff off and throw it onto my car.

Re: TBI to TPI

i think all u have to do is re-pin the existing harness. look for 746 to 165 ecm swap info.

Re: TBI to TPI

why dont u just go with speed density instead? there is a sticky on here with the tbi /746 ecm to tpi/730 ecm re-pinning instructions.

90-92. For an older tpi manifold you may have to get the 9th inj. block off plate. May also need tps for a SD and a few more sensors, not sure. Will be much easier and less maintenence with SD.
