Hard starting TPI

I have a '89 IROC-Z with a 350 TPI motor (Came with 305), It has SLP injecters & prom. The problem is when the motor is cold it is hard to start & surges until it warms up some. i have checked fuel pressure, 50psi when cranking but drops off to almost zero. I have also checked for vacum leaks around manifold base, runners (top & bottom), & throttle body. Can anyone offer any advice? I have good mech. skills, but not familiar with TPI's or computer controlled stuff.

Re: Hard starting TPI

doesn't sound fuel pressure related but anyway the proper way to check the FP is to connect your gauge when the car is off , remove the vacume hose from the intake and plug it and then start the car and let it idle. Plugging the hose will simulate WOT and there is where you want to check what pressure you are getting. What does it run like after warmed up?

It runs good when warm. I should mention it also has a SLP camshaft to.

Re: Hard starting TPI

what are the cam specs? If all your sensors are fine, then you may benefit from getting your chip tuned.

Re: Hard starting TPI

Remove that SLP chip asap. find a stock 89 5.7 chip (to use until you get tuned properly) also make sure you have the correct knock sensor 4 the 5.7..
I remove knock sensors on my MAF cars.. waay 2 much false knock for me..

Re: Hard starting TPI

I'm not sure what the cam specs are as it was installed when I got the car and the prev. owner didn't have the cam card, injector, or chip specs, it does have bit of a lump to at idle. It doesn't throw any codes?

Fuel pressure still good after checking the right way! I was wondering if a leaking injector could cause a problem like this and if so, how would I check for this?

Re: Hard starting TPI

Can anyone tell me how to identify which injectors I have and how to check if I might have a leaking injector?
