Need to beat a roadrunner

Okay i have a 305 B4C and need to upgrade it to beat a road runner. I know i could do the 350 or 383 swap but i want to beat this car with a 305. The only Con is I don't lnow a lot about engines. I work on cars but never had to replace cams heads ect. Blot on is easy but i really want to win. What do i do guy?

P.S. The Roadrunner is my dads car so im tring to show him up. He's stock by the way.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

If it's a 383 or a 440 you've got your work cut out for you. I can tell you it probably wont be done for less than a few grand.

But the only way we can give you an accurate answer is if you tell us the exact year and motor he has on his roadrunner.

If the Roadrunner is indeed stock then it won't be too difficult. What is your budget...?

How I miss the 70's) I know my ole' Charger would beat the pants off my 305, Figure in the fact that I could almost guarantee the Roadrunner your dad has is 4 barrel! And I would assume he is also sporting the 727 Torquoflite transmission. I enjoy your enthusiasm to upstage the ole'man! The weakness I had in my 73' Charger was I had a hard time hookin' up. I can only assume though that the converter and re-end are better in your ole' mans Mopar, allowing for better hook up. Would love to see pics of both cars side to side!

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

That was one big heavy car. Dont think it would take a whole lot. Probably close as it is Im gonna guess.

Go run him anyway as is, go from there.

Did some googling looks like he may have a 16ish sec time give/take

Wow 16's are you crazy? Stock roadrunners run at least 14's, on a bad day. It's what they were made to do.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

Not too sure that a 1974 anything ever ran a 14, not sure even a 454 Vette could. Those were low compression smog motors. After 70/71 everything took a turn towards lame-0 performance.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

if your car is running right, you may have a chance.

74 was into the start of emissions/low performance era.
the 318 was the base motor, so 16s and slower is very true.
the 360 was an up grade from the 318, but still not fast.
i don't think the 383 was avalable in 74, but the 440 was an option and only with an auto trans.
from allpar, there were less than 400 1974 RRs with the 440.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

Dont know about the Mopars but many Chevys even in 73 were 8.5:1 gutless wonders. My Stingray was a whopping 180 hp turd lol.

I bet if the Camaro leaves good he will take the Mopar be fun to see.
If it was cursed with the 400 even better.

I would read through here and see what this one was built with. There is a good amount of info on the forum about heads cam nitrous for our cars. so many guys have asked about cam/head swap for the 305 and what needs to be done in order to use them. Just do a search

from what im getting from allpar, the 383 was not available in 1974.
the 318 base, the 360, 400, and 440.
in fact, all the sources i checked show 1971 as the last year for the 383.
yearone, mymopar, and some others.
from the houstonmopars site, "The 383 was gradually detuned, as all smog motors were, and in 1972 it was replaced with the huge bore (4.340) 400."
so the 383 was last used in 1971, with the 400 being its replacement starting in 72.
so if this RR is in fact a 74 and if it is a big block, its either a 400 or a 440.

some pics would be great, besides showing off the car, they would prove the model year.

since you seem to have more than a passing interest in old mopars, you may like this site, its the best documented on-line resto i have ever seen.
and an absolutely gorgeous car.

people tell me i have tons of patience, but nothing like this guy does, about 14 years and counting.

Good info, thanks. The "Year One" book I had for my 73' Charger said it was the the 383 block so I took into assumption as did perhaps the OP's father that it was a 383 even though it was bored out to the 400. Even the air cleaner cover had the "383" badge on it. Not sure about the RR but my 73'Charger only had a 2 barrel (de-tuned as u stated). I'll tell you what that 73' 2 barrel I had would whip the pants off my stock 305/91'WS6, hands down......... I've never driven a 305 TPI car tho and don't know what they can bring to the table. My 91' is TBI and she is quick but not even close to the Mopar I owned/sold..... Stupid Mikey

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

from my understanding the mopar 400 is nothing but a 383 with a bigger bore.
of course im sure they had to make internal changes to the block to allow for the bigger bore.
like a 305, 350, or a 400 SBC, can anyone tell a mopar 383 from a 400 or a 440 by just looking?
also, think about the chevy 396 big block. somewhere around 1970 or 71 it turned into a 402, but for a little while chevy continued to market it as a 396.
like the chevy 396, the mopar 383 had quite a reputation.

then again, mopar, just like chevy and ford would use left over parts from previous years, which may very well be why your 73 charger had a 383 breather cover.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

A 74 Roadrunner was a Satelite body, Chrysler was notorious for use left over parts and a one part fits all. So most likely it is a 400 badged as a 383 that was common then. Guys knew a 383 had a reputation a 400 didn't so thats how it works. Still if the car is "Cough" stock don't expect an easy win. Even stock with some tune in timeing and carb it will wake up. Run him heads up as you are stock, with ported runners and intake. Have your chip flashed with a tick more fuel pressure and a shift kit you should be good. If you do beat him and he decides to tweek his ride his wallet is bigger then yours I suspect and a rematch will get ugly.

Re: Need to beat a roadrunner

.. I assume this is a TBI 305" and should be in TBI forum? Anyways...

.. The FIRST step in any build is what you are doing here: RESEARCH!

.. Open hood on Dad's car and see what he has: the famous '383' emblem? Prolly actually a 400" by '74... 2bbl. or 4 bbl. carb.? Prolly 2bbl. it sounds like... headers? dual or single exhaust? You gotta know what you're aiming at..!!!

.. In the late 1960's, Road Runner 383's with 4bbl., hot cam, high compression, 'fuelie' valves, and underrated 335HP were dogs off the showroom floor, about 15.5 seconds in 1/4 (back in the days of driver + test logger passenger + 5th wheel timing equipment)... However, set the ignition timing forward from the 'granny' factory settings and they suddenly jumped to low 14's/high 13's (with just the driver)...

.. By 1971, compression dropped, HP was down, back to about 15 seconds, by 1974, compression dropped further, wimpy cam, 2bbl. carb., upped to 400" so it would at least still spin the tires a bit off the line.. probably 16 seconds wheezing for breath...

.. Your Camaro, TBI 305", 400 lbs. lighter, that helps a lot, prolly 17 or 18 seconds in 1/4... prolly crappy flowing swirl port heads with a swirl ramp blocking the intake port... need to cut the ramp out and port them some... or swap to better heads like a used set of 'Vette/ZZx -113 aluminum heads or the 1995-2000 305" Vortec truck heads... and a mild cam... I assume you have a roller cam, so a used TPI 350" roller cam(~325HP) or ZZ3/ZZ4 cam(350HP) or GM Hot cam(400HP) might be scored for a cheap, serious power and RPMs gain... you'll need some 'Z28' or other better valve springs as well... also, some headers and a true dual exhaust or big tube single exhaust... (flat top or mini-dome pistons if you want to get seriously into the bottom end...)

.. So, cam, heads, exhaust should put you low 15's to 14's which should be enough to make Pops want to upgrade his RR some...

.. The last TPI 305" F-Bodies w/ dual cats ran mid 14's/~95 MPH off the showroom floor...

.. Reminds me of long ago when I was riding my mini-bike and Dad was riding the Cushman Eagle scooter and he challenged me to a drag... The big Eagle with 7HP 350cc Wisconsin flathead engine and two speed tranny and centrifugal clutch chugged off the line as usual... the minibike I think shocked him when it wheelied off in the first couple gears... I don't think he had realized how much totally faster it was with a 2-cylinder 350cc Jawa motorcycle engine and 4-speed tranny...
