305 TPI engine jumpy and idles wierd

At low rpms its real jumpy like it has a miss but it smooths out sometimes and when your cruising. Also the check engine light will come on for a couple minutes then shut off. Any ideas?

Re: 305 TPI engine jumpy and idles wierd

have you pulled the code off when its there to see what it is ?

ive got a similar problem with my car at the minute and everything im trying isnt helping, i took all the spark plugs out today and cleaned them, cleaned the cap and rotor etc, took it out and its exactly the same, low RPM's if you touch the accelerator it feels like its misfiring and its all sputtery, but if you put your foot down more it takes off and is great, fine if im on a motorway but around town its pretty useless as its all over the place.

next thing to do is clean the IAC so ive been told, but i dont see how the IAC will help the car when its running anyway

The IAC controls how much air is allowed into the engine at idle. If it is dirty or in need of replacing, it can cause rough idle and low rpm problems.

I would start by checking/replacing it. If you are going to try cleaning it, I recommend seafoam. Spray seafoam all inside the throttle body, and make sure you get the hole for the IAC good. Then take a clean rag and clean the entire inside of the throttle body, including BOTH sides of the throttle blade. Depending on how dirty it was, you should see it smooth out quite a bit, and even notice a better throttle response as well.

The problem here sounds less to me like an IAC issue and more like a lean condition. Maybe caused by unmetered air or a dirty or faulty MAF sensor. I would suspect injector faults except you say the engine runs well at higher throttle opening, which points away from fuel. A scan tool with datastream would allow you to see integrator and block learn and may point out a lean condition at idle.

Today i just fixed it by adjusting the TPS. I noticed how you can move it and reliezed what the previous owner did was just put it on there straight. When I slightly pushed the pedal it was going WOT. Still needs adjusting but much better. Thanks for the input guys.

my TPS is new and adjusted correctly so i know its not that on mine, after reading through other posts i think it might be my MAF, ive got a error code for the burnoff circuit failure so if the MAF is dirty it might be making the car run like crap ?

Well today I found the real source cause it happened again. The MAF or MAP whatever it is that goes in middle of two piece intake was dirty. The previous owner had KN filters and over oiled them and oil was coated all over the sensor and intake and the engine was sucking it up. Cleaned it all up and cleaned the sensor and she runs normal now.
