TPI Cruise Control

I was wondering for the guys that have a later 305 tpi engine could help me out with the cruise control set up. There is a vacuum line that is not connected and the throttle cable is not connected. My questions are: 1. Where does the vacuum line connect to? and 2. How does the cable attach to the throttle? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: TPI Cruise Control

The cable attaches to the throttle arm on the throttle body, right next to the cable for the gas pedal. Don't have a good picture of mine but I could get one.

As for the vacuum line, there are a couple. One runs from the engine (and reservoir) to the cruise control module and the other from the module to the clutch and/or brake pedal. Would need further info to get you and more info.......

Re: TPI Cruise Control

There is a large 3/8" vacuum dump line that goes to the brake pedal switch. Then there is the small vacuum line that runs to straight plenum vacuum. The vacuum ball is connected to the same line via a T fitting.

I don't have a picture of the throttle cable connected but here is a shot of the throttle body and you can see the lower pin with the clip still on it is for the cruise cable. There is also a hole right beside the throttle cable in the bracket where it clips in. The larger bottom hole in the bracket is for the kickdown cable for the trans if you have an auto which I do not.

Picture is worth a thousand words! But it still doesn't show the vacuum dump to the brake pedal.

Re: TPI Cruise Control

Well I got a vacuum line coming off the control unit that looks like it goes down and follows the frame. But I do not have a clip for the cable on the throttle lever.

the 15567924 clip is easy to find at the junkyard, you can see the application listing.

Re: TPI Cruise Control

LilSki, I noticed in your picture you have a red rubber throttle body connector. What kind of intake do you have set up?

Re: TPI Cruise Control

It's a basic "cold air" kit I got off ebay. I think I paid $50 for it and it came with the filter. I only bought it because I didn't have any factory stuff as my car was originally a carbed car.

Re: TPI Cruise Control

Well I thought I would ask because I still have the stock, constrictive intake on mine still and was looking for ideas for a new intake that would help the flow.

You can gut the bottom of the air box and use K&N filters to help air flow. I have a couple i'd give you for shipping cost if your interested.

What do you mean gut the bottom? And I already have a K&N filter on there.

That's a good question. But the main reason is my car was a carbed car when I got it and I bought the TPI setup. The bolts that hold the throttle body and thermostat housing on came with the setup I bought. I do have all the factory bolts from a 305 TPI motor I aquired but I just never thought of swapping them over. And in all reality the only kind of person who would ever notice is a TPI enthusiast.

And as for the clamps I refuse to reuse those factory GM wire style clamps on any of my cars. And the air tube ones came with the cold air kit.

Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them

As for the intake I am actually pretty pleased with it overall. My intake temps run around 5 deg above ambient. It does get a bit warm after sitting but it cools right down after is it running a bit. It can be a little on the loud side though. You can really hear it sucking up front when you get into it. Overall you can't really beat it for $50.

Re: TPI Cruise Control

Im in the same boat.

By some miracle my cruise worked after the engine swap. Recently, it stopped working. I hve my Vapor Canistor moved next to my battery (DR SIDE). I deleted my EGR. I'm in the process of putting my TPI runners and plenums back on. One of the 2 vac hoses is disconneced from the cannister. I can't tell if the line came off of the brake switch either (since I recently did a new master-slave swap). I have a vac tester, but I'm not sure where to start.

I know I need vac for AFPR, brakes.... I have new valve covers and need to run a PCV line and valve (got it). But the pass side valve cover, I'm not sure what port of throttle boddy that breather line hooks up to.

I picked up a cruise setupup from an '88 S-10 just for parts if needed... But I'd love a clear schematic for my 1988 TPI with cruise and vapor canister, vacuum reserve ball, brake switch, and PCV and return.

Anyone have a any good sketches? I'm ditching the odd shapped elbows by EGR, and Adj fuel pressure regulator. I did also get 2 brand new cruise stalks.
