The debate goes on, LT1 cam in a LB9, help

ok so i can tell this has been an on going debate, i wasnt sure where to ask this question so feel free to move it mods

anyway i cant get a straight answere, CAN you put an LT1 cam in a stock LB9 and not modify the computer?

what are the specs on the LT1 cam?

i have an lt1 cam and a .260/.268 .444/.444 cam i purchased from comp cams for a TPI LB9/L98 motor

which is better, will i need to modify my computer to run properly with either?

btw im not going for race car im just going for a clean restored street car with a little more pep then they had factory

What are all the current mods to the car? What kind of power are you wanting to acheive? Answer those questions for us then maybe we can help recommend a path to take. Me personally I would never use another OEM cam when you can gain more usable power for one that is designed for your setup such as one from CompCams. Don't be fooled by over all specs.

Also, pickup a book or two on high performance and the SBC engine. You can learn alot from reading instead of relying on digging for answers from people.

Re: The debate goes on, LT1 cam in a LB9, help

well im not new to cars especialy sbc, just new to EFI and i love it much more over Carb and TBI which is where all my prior experience is

and it seems the LT1 cam is a very common swap

however i have that brand new cam i purchased last year when i was planning a L98 install but now iv decided to stay stock with an LB9

as for other mods to the car, well, lets see, not much, 700r4 rebuilt with a shift kit and corvete servos, the rear is now a 3.23 9 bolt, however im geting a 2.73 10 bolt posi because thats what was originaly in it, and when the new motor is in ill be getting a set of shorty headers, undecided on exhuast, i think im gona just get a flowmaster cat back, their setups look very very nice on third gens, i had an 80 series on my 90 and i loved how the tips are bent to fit third gens.

Why go to the 2.73s? Thats like putting a v6 in place of your v8.

Re: The debate goes on, LT1 cam in a LB9, help

The specs you posted for the Comp cam are misquoted. I assume that what you mean is 260/268 degrees and .444/.444 gross lift. This is a mild cam. LT1 cams are all over the place as the engine was used in several applications with various cam specs. Therefore the term "LT1 cam" can mean alot of different things. I generally agree that an aftermarket performance cam, as long as it's correctly applied is superior to an OE cam swap.

For one thing, the LT1 is an entirely different intake design and therefore the cam lobe that was designed for it is not ideal for the long tube TPI. Most LT1 cams are very mild anyway so builders get away with the swap. The comp cam will work with your stock tune, assuming it's not less than 112 degrees LSA. You may have some affect on idle quality and light throttle drivability but generally it should work okay. You may want to play with ignition timing, which you will have to do by adjusting base timing since you aren't reflashing the PCM. To get the most out of the cam swap you will also need to suppliment fueling which you can do by installing an adjustable pressure regulator and adding about 5psi to base pressure. Your car's fuel management system is speed density and will not adapt as well to increased cylinder filling as a MAF car will.

Re: The debate goes on, LT1 cam in a LB9, help

pretty much iv decided to not use the LT1 cam, i know nothing about where it came from or what the specs are or if its any good, i got it for free so screw it

and i dont mind if the comp cam affects idle, it will probably sounds better, as far as light throttle cruising, this is a cruise car not a race car but im really trying to avoid having to put new valve springs in or tune the computer

for the little gain ill get of installing it, if its not cost effective to the gain ill just leave it all original...
