14102187 heads on 89 L98 TPI IROC?? WTF!!!!
I was just getting ready to decide on weather to replace valve seals on my L98 G92 Iroc and found that 14102187 heads are on my 350. So I went ahead and checked to see if I STILL had a 350 (and I do) and found some #'s
Arn't these heads for a 305???
#'s Stamped by water pump

No cast #'s????? I was once told that this was original engine.... I am going to assume that that info was very wrong!!! PJC engine suffix code.... anyone know what that is. I can not find it anywhere online.

The casting number is on the passengers side behind the head.
It’s also a partial number on the side of the block like 880.

On that same pad you should have a partial VIN stamped. If the VIN matches the car, the block is probably original to the car.

stamped on the front though. Also read partial VIN may be stamped by oil filter.... will check for that soon.
looks like 638 stamped on front of block.

Not to rain on your parade, but I'd also question whether the engine is original to the chassis.
AFAIK, the last six (or eight) characters of the VIN that appears on your invoice should be stamped along with the engine code on the engine block "pad", if the engine is original to the chassis.
I've attached a photo of my engine block stamping and invoice for comparison.

Gotta agree with this.

The 14093638 is a 87/95 block used in cars and trucks so it might be the original block.

Wow. How was it running? Me and my Dad pulled a rebuilt engine one had a 217 head on one side and a 601 head on the other. That's 58cc and a 64cc on a 350 block. Dang thing ran pretty good he was just going to rebuild it. Decided go wit some Patriots instead.

Should make a nice strong street engine. I'm thinking buying Vortec crate engine and throwing a GM 049 cam 207 213 duration 415 431 lift I have in it and keeping my TBI.

Funny how these things happen. It would be worth tearing into the motor a little further to see if it is in fact the original block (based on the partial vin stamping). You can also get the casting date from the block and that may give you a clue as well. It could be that the whole motor was a cheap reman that threw together a bunch of sbc parts without paying attention to what should have been used. If you pull the heads, it will be easy to tell if it had an overbore. I would also be curious what cam is in there.
I had a similar experience. I bought my GTA in 1999 with about 100K on the odometer. The previous owner only had the car for about a year and he didn't really know the history before that. I ran it for another 60K miles until the head gasket went. When I tore the motor down, I found that it was a 350, but not original. It was a reman bored .040 over 1987 350 block with TBI swirl port heads and a 773 (90-92 L98) cam. This seems that it was built to a Caprice 9C1 police spec. So, it was close to the original L98 spec, but with the swirl port heads. This explains why I always had issues with detonation on the 2-3 upshift, even with 93 octane and stock timing. Makes sense now. Otherwise the car ran good, but ran out of breath a little sooner than the typical L98 (if that's even possible)
Moral of the story is you never really know the history.

638 block is typically a 350 tbi/TPI block. If those were 350 truck heads that motor would be great in a tow rig lol
