What Is The Best Cold Air Induction System?????????

Hello,

I´m from Germany, and I have seen some "cold air induction systems" for Pontiac Firebird/TRANS AM´s! So I have a question!

WHAT IS THE BEST COLD AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM???

I konw someon like SLP, Hooly, Random Technology and K&N!

What is the best one? Can I use a cold air induction like SLP together whit a underhood cold air intake system?
Which give my the moust power and better exhaust sound?

Do someone konw a air intake system over the foglightplace in the front of a TRANS AM (YearModell 1996)???

Give me some links and some build photos/reports abaut your air intake/induction system!!!

Danix

I think the Ram-air setup is functional and I sure am NOT going to spend the dough for an SLP one...

I think the whole ******* comment applies occasionally to ghetto engineering...but not in this case.

Hey Ron, what kind of scoop did you get again? I haven't really searched yet, but it is a Spring project.

Thanks!

Its from March Performance Pulleys, I got it from Jegs. Its actually the one that fits the Mustang. Not sure which of the 3 numbers it was, I think the one for 86-93 Mustangs. I told Jegs I had one and wrecked the front end of my car and just needed the scoop and they ordered it for me. Lots cheaper than buying the kit. Don't know if you'd have the same luck or not.

Make fun all you want, but it works real good.

The guy has a 96T/A so I would suggest he check out year one for a cold air kit. I think the link is www.yearone.com

here's a terrible pick, but gives you an idea. it's 4" around with a K@N, a few other little things and works awsome. sounds like a blower when it starts up; especially when you run higher than 2500 rpm's you can really hear it wine.

I just made my own with a K&N cone filter. Used hardware plumbing supplies, exhaust piping, and the stock MAF. Works great and you can hear the air getting sucked in. Really improved my performance over that horrible stock intake. Cost me only $46 and looks great Took about 2 hours to do.

What did you use for tubing and how big is that, 4"?? Looks great though, where did you mount the air filter, is it in the engine bay still, almost looks like you mounted it on the underside of the battery tray area? Either way it looks great, I want something to look as clean as that as Im not too happy with the stock dual air inlet, just looks plain restrictive to me...

Some people say it's not truly COLD AIR, but It's a definite improvement over stock and looks great. How's this?

how do you make the piece between the TB and the MAF? Is it mandrel bent exaust tubing? My L98 is out of an '87 GTA and it has the box shaped piping between the MAF and TB. I already have the cone filter in place of the stock airbox, and I cut out the steel underneith it so it actually does get cold air. I think replacing that other pipe would help. Thanks.

my L98 is SD so i didn't have the maf in consideration when making my piece, but i'm sure you could easily incorporate it.

mine is custom made from 4" stainless exhaust tubing that is mandrel bent and welded to fit my measurements. there is a 4 1/2" hole where the battery lays and then a K&N filter on the underside. this way makes much more power as well as you get cooler air then if the filter is in the engine bay.

you can check out more pics of the car at

NOt sure about cold air, but i think that if u get a ss hood and put a filter in there, it will help alot, much more air flowing into the filter, thats what i am doing soon

It's two 3 inch 90° long elbow PVC connectors cut in half and epoxied together/painted black.

You can hear it sometimes but the exhaust is kinda loud.
You can hear it in this video,
http://www.donpagevideo.com/video/ZepherWS6.mpg

It is the part where the camera pans the side of the car and comes towards the front, you can hear the sucking sound.

I think you can get those rubber hoses at Home Depot or Lowes.

Free Bird, the rubber connectors come from Lowes in the plumbing department. They are used to connect PVC pipe where you need odd angles. Big 90* elbow is about $10.00 dollars and the straigh connector was about $7.00 I think. Good Luck!!

sheesh guys if you're gonna go to all that trouble, why don't you just take the ram air out of a z28?? and another thing isn't a noisy intake indicative of turbulence i've installed K&N filters in my 85 Z and that makes a helluva difference.:lala:

I had a similar home grown set up on mine, used some 3" aluminized exhaust tubing and then some 90 degree bends of industrial radiator hose that was 3" ID (that was a perk of working at a parts store plenty of time to research your stuff when its slow) some hose clamps and a K&N conical filter and piped it behind the headlights and was good to go.

Archael the ram-air for the Z-28 won't work in a T/A. The ram goes down near the foglight openings in the Z and the T/A has a different nose structure. No....the noise is indicative of the massive increase in air the engine is getting. Like an oxygen thief....you know!

What size K&N filters are you guys using or better yet part numbers if possible as Im gonna try and run a CAI set up like Kandied's and if not then it will be more like 3.1EyeCandy's
and Ill see what difference I get since my car runs consistant ETs and MPHs. Is 4 inch or 3 inch better?? For a temp basis, Im gonna use PVC IF it works then Ill see about having stainless steel tubing bent to my specifications, if you can post about the filter size and part numbers or where you got it and if you ran into any problems with 4inch or 3 inch tubing before Fri latest please as Sat Ill be hitting the track and I want to give this a shot even if its a small gain....

if youve got the MAF its easiest to go with 3" cause thats what size it is, if not then 4" would be better just cause you have more air. I dont remember the part#'s for my filter but if you go to any parts store they will have a K&N book and if you look in the back of it it will have a list of types and the dimensions of each, best to take a note pad with you cause most parts stores wont be able to get half of those filters, just call summit or jegs to see what they have available

HTH

I have SD so I dont need to worry about a MAF sensor so yeah Im thinking of going with a 4 inch set up like Kandied's. I might do it a little different and have it where I can run it thru the battery tray with a filter underneath for the track, but when Im on the streets have it so I can use another shorter piece to keep the filter out of harms way of puddles and what not. Ill see what I can come up with since I already know the cruise control is in the way somewhat but I dont mind losing that since I never use it...

Wow ... that´s is a real mean sounding car you have there.
How did you manage to get it to sound that mean?
One more thing are you satisfied with your dynomax headers? any leaks etc.? I´m planning to get them and was wondering if they are any good.

Thanks.
The sound comes from the Pacesetter 3" exhaust I have on the car.
The Dynomax headers are good, very inexpensive. I have one leak but that is because one of the flanges has a bend in it, got it used from a friend. I just need to remove the header and bend the flange straight and I am good to go.

britered86transam, I think Zeph explained it just 2 replies above where you asked. The Dynomax Headers can be purchased from Summit, Jegs or IRC.

I had to get a new y-pipe made for the Dynomax. You can have your y-pipe modified for the headers, I just didn't have my old y-pipe, I sold my entire Dynomax 2.5" cat-back with the stock y-pipe.

this is the Pacesetter 3" Stainless steel exhaust. It came right off of my friends 95 Trans Am and bolted right up to my car.
