throttle body differences

Hi. What are the differences between throttle body with triangle port separated and not??? My old Tb. did not have separated port. On low RPM and startup car was starting and ilde fine. But when it warmed up throttle response was sluggish. On new TB. Car runs great and have loots of power when warm but on the startup it stals and die on the first try when the ambient temperature at the morning is low. If it warm up a little bit it runs ok. It is sounding like IAC is not working and keeping the RPM. (Iac and tps is new and running great on old TB) .TPS and IAC are the same and set in the same way. Does closed IAC port make this much diffreance??? or is this a problem of correctly setting ILDE ?? My plennum has a separated triangle port. (TB gasket are diffrent too). I don,t want to use old TB becouse of TB shaft is worn.

Re: throttle body differences

Left is 89-92 throttle body rebuilt with 85-88 linkage. The difference is the iac passage. Later 89-92 can be used on any year plenum.

Re: throttle body differences

Another option is to repair your original with this kit, I haven’t used it myself but heard it
mentioned on here. It’s about $180 US but you will have no more slop in the original TB when done.

Re: throttle body differences

Do you have the correct runners installed for the plenum? Meaning, does it have the small runner between the 2 set of large tubes on the driver side?

Re: throttle body differences

I have one on the passanger side.

and none on the driver side

i have just cleaned the old TB (with open iac port) and instaled the same Tps and moved the Bottom IAC assembly to it. And engine is working perfect! I have good rpm and it is not stalling and holding even if i turn the ac and put in in drive. (On the closed IAC port TB it was stalling when cold) So now i am confused what is the problem with closed Iac port ??? What solution to Iac is better? Closed or open?? And what is causing the problem when i install the closed iac TB ?? For sure it is not the IAC and tps (it is set correctly to 0.54). It is strange to me. And thx for Your time and help

Re: throttle body differences

As TTOP350 was asking about, looks like you have 89’ up runners and have a 85-88 plenum with 89 up TB which will all work together as is. Your not getting vacuum with the closed off 85-88 TB which is causing the symptoms you were mentioning. TTOP and Tuned pointed me in the right direction when I had a similar issue as I had maxed out IAC readings on my scanner as well.

The closed TB will not work as is but can work if you take a carbide bit and carefully mimic the open design ( near the throttle bores) of the TB that is working. I did this on my car when I upgraded the runners and had a similar issue because the runners were for 89’ up and I had a earlier style plenum like you. Just be careful if you do this as the aluminum is soft and you do not want to go through it. Here is an example of what you are trying for.

Re: throttle body differences

No problem, there is no difference in horsepower or torque if that is what you mean by performance. All you are doing by cutting into those throttle body bores is allowing the IAC to work properly by giving it air. My car idles and runs great after I did it.

I would just cut the TB bores as opposed to spending more money and time replacing the runners which is a bit of job if you’ve never done it before. Unless you are going to upgrade to bigger aftermarket runners I would leave those alone.

There is one other option, I believe you can drill a hole in the plenum where that triangle is as well which is even easier if the plenum is already off. Just use a 3/8 or half inch bit

If you do any of this be sure to have the parts off the engine and do a thorough job cleaning up the metal shavings. I plugged the IAC hole in the TB with a rag and used TB cleaner and compressed air to make sure I got all the shavings.

Here is my thread where those other members laid out what to do.

Re: throttle body differences

Yeah with the Bluetooth adapter from this place. Very easy to use on a old android phone.
