I hope this is the right message board but I just picked up an 89 V6 manual firebird with a bad fuel pump. PO had already taken everything out including the tank and both panhard bars. Ordered an entire new fuel pump assembly and installed it on the original tank, but once I got it up under the car the tank wouldn't go up the whole way. There are no glaring fitment issues and I'm thinking about buying a new tank and seeing if that will fit. Anyone have tricks for getting a tank into place?
What is it hitting on? It takes a certain amount of "correct" wiggle and angle to get it in. Is the car up in the air with wheels, gas door and trim piece, lower shocks, swaybar endlinks, panhardbar, frame tie bar off and rear axle dropped down really far?
I dont have jack stands so Its on ramps atm. all suspension is still together. Like I said I cant seem to find where its hitting it just wont slip in. I guess I'll have to invest in some jack stands sooner or later so I'll try pulling all that stuff apart when I get them
You'll never get it in with the car sitting on the rear suspension.
Drew is 101% right, if your car isn't this far in the air, with this much of the rear suspension dropped and exhaust dropped, you ain't getting it in there.
Also, and I'm not saying this as a ball bust, more for your general info, your V6 is not "TPI" (Tuned Port Injection) , which is what this section of TGO is for, instead it's "MPFI" (Multi Port Fuel Injection) , and so the best place for your posting would have been either the V6 section or the "Tech general engine/mechanical" section. The system known as TPI was only used on the 305 and 350 eight cylinder cars.
PS, do yourself a huge favor, when you drop your rear axle assembly as seen in my pics, make sure to remove the single 13MM and the two 10MM bolts holding the clips that hold the rear brake line so that you don't rip them out when the rear end drops (they hold the fuel lines as well, but it's the brake line that will suffer if the clips are still bolted in place). I unclipped the brake line from the clips so that there was plenty of play for the line to not get kinked as the rear axle was lowered . You will also see that I've got two jackstands on each side of the car as well as the tires slid under there for safety's sake. If you look closely there is just enough room under there to get two jackstands firmly on the rear subframes (or whatever it is that the reinforced areas are called that the rear control arms bolt to) so there will be no nasty squished to death scenes on the 6:00 news.....
