Thinking about a TPI 383 setup instead of rebuild
Was looking at the parts I needed for a rebuild the other day and thought about the 383. I don't have an umlimitted budget so the super-ram is out. I've got smog checks coming up next year (they changed the laws here
) so the miniram is out (or is the 383 out as well??). I was thinking of using the stock tpi plenum and runners until I could afford a set of hi-flo. I already have the runners ported to match the plenum and the plenum ported. I've heard the car would run out of air at abot 4500 rpm...that doesn't bother me.
1)Has anyone out there used the stock tpi equipment on top of a 383?
2)What is the minimum I should change *until further $$$ of course*?
3)I've been looking at the Eagle 383 kit from Jegs...which one??? Below is them listed:
Either 2-piece or 1-piece (which do we have?) rear seal
**Piston: Inverted Dome @ -18cc, Comp Ratio: w58cc Head 10.3:1, w/64cc Head 9.7:1, w/76cc Head 8.7:1....$$$$(more)
**Piston: Flat Top @ -7cc, Comp Ratio: w58cc Head 11.7:1, w/64cc Head 10.9:1, w/76cc Head 9.6:1...$$$(less)
If this comes off as jargon, you're in the same boat I am. I've no clue what this stuff means. I'm hoping for a highly streetable motor with rare track use. I'm also intrigued by the high mpg stroker engines can attain. If anyone can explain this stuff it'd be great. The other option is a 355...not a bad choice...but not a stroker either.
Thanks guys.

what engine do you have currently? I recommend speedomotive for 383 kits. I got mine from them and they were alot cheaper than jegs. You can get the same parts for less money.

I've got the stock 87 350 TPI. How much does the SpeedAutomotive go for? How's the quality? What are you using for your build?

I went with their might mouse kit and that costed me 895. I also got my cam, lifters, T56 flywheel for 2 pce seal. I got shoot peened rods. I used hypertecutic pistons because of compression. I got all that shipped for about $1700. The quality is great and service is great.
Minimum you're gonna need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Your 87 is a maf system so it will compensate by itself somewhat, but not altogether. The 383 will be fine for smog checks, never seen one pull the engine apart to check the stroke
. But to pass you'll probably need a prom to get everything tuned right. As for what kit you should use, keep you compression in the neighborhood of 10.3 to 1. Assuming your current engine is a 350 (since you 're looknig at 383) your current heads have 64cc combustion chambers so you know what to look at. Use one of the crane cams designed to work with your computer. Remember that you have a roller cam now, so buy a roller cam for your block. YOu don't have to, but you'll get a little more performance for the same duration. You mentioned plenum and runners, but what about the intake base? at the very least you should port it heavily, or pick up an edelbrock unit. Check out the articles and threads on siamesing one as well. You'll also want to do some suspension upgrades cause with the tpi this motor will be a huge torque monster and you'll quickly shread the tires. Good luck.
