Max lift on L98 heads

I want to try and put a LT1 cam and 1.6rr on a stock L98. I'll be using LT1 springs though. Can an 87 L98 handle this lift? From some numbers I've seen this combo can reach about .480 lift.

The machine shop that worked on my heads, informed me that the heads would only handle .460 before the retainers hit the seals. They handled the spring selection, so they had to check for clearance and coil bind. I have an 89 L98.

Do you just have to get new valvesprings and then you could use 1.6 rrs and LT1 cam?

whu does slp sell a cam with .480/.487 lift? I think it will handle the lift but, may reduce spring life. other people here run that much on stock l98 heads.

That's because SLP will also reccomend the right spring with their cam. Stock L98 springs are weak. LT1 cam w/1.6 and the proper valve springs will work fine on otherwise stock L98 heads.

So can stock LT1 springs handle the lift? Or is aftermarket the only answer?

Yeah, they'll work but the stock LT1 springs aren't worth keeping for the $50 or so it would cost for new ones that can do a better job, just some extra insurance, cheap at that.
