Trans Fluid for '85 T-5
Trans Fluid for '85 T-5
What do I put in it. My father and I dropped the tranny during the winter, and put new seals in it. We drained the oil and put in 10w-30... According to him that is what the serive manual recommened. Now my tranny has an annoying whinning. Is there another kind of fluid that you are suppose to put into it? Please help me out.

I can't remeber what the 85 T-5 calls for but some years got dexron III auto trany fluid and other years call for manual tranny fluid. I would say that 10-30 motor oil if thats what you put in it is not the right stuff and get it out quickly. I personally use redline MTL in my WC T-5 and it originally had dexron III in it. I have read that redline MTL really strengthened up the tranny and made quite a diff. So far I have had no strange sounds or whines from my T-5 with redline MTL. My father also uses it in his 87 Iroc and my sister uses it in her 83 Z28 T-5. Hope this helps.

WC vs. Non WC is a big consideration here. Without a doubt all of the WCs call for ATF, but the non WCs seem to vary, and even GM couldn't make up their mind. Their specifications seemed to change from year to year.
Both of my 86 2.8s had ATF in the transmissions, but from what I recall from reading here, the non WCs used gear oil in order to make the synchros function properly. The WCs used a tighter tolerance synchro, thus necessitating the thinner ATF.
BUT, (there's always a but
), the input shaft bearing doesn't get a lot of oil way up in front, and I think the gear oil made that situation even worse. With the ATF, enough splashed up there and kept it lubed.
So, basically to answer your question, I don't friggin know.

My '84 Helms call for Dexron II.
FWIW, the best to use is Redline's MTL. I trashed my current car's T-5 in under 30k miles while I was stationed in Germany. The Dexron couldn't take the heat from the A'bahn. With the replacement T-5 MTL was recommended. That was 135k miles ago. The last 35k has been behind my ZZ4.

I figured it all out... Thanks guys, I drained the motor oil out, and put in dexron III... I guess that what they make now? Anyways I found a GM service manual for a '85 Firebird and this is what I found...
