9 Bolt fluid capacity and torque settings

How much fluid does a 9 bolt rear take? And what should I torque the cover bolts to? My manuals only cover 10 bolts.

2 quarts on the gear oil.

Don't know on the torque amounts. I'm sure my Haynes or Chilton's manual has this at home. I am at work... I'll check tonight.

Just under 2qts on the fluid (including the additive) will cause it to run out the drain hole. 20-22 ftlbs on the cover bolts.

D'oh, another question. How many ounces of additive do I add for the posi? I'm using Valvoline 80-90 gear oil, and I bought two tubes of additive.

I put in one of the little bottles (may 6-8 oz)? Never actually looked, just add one bottle

Yeah, I figured that out after I was informed that GM has it's own additive. I took back the no-name tubes I had and put in 1 of GM's bottles.

While I had it opened I took a look at the gears... they almost look brand new. Either Borg-Warner makes a good rear or this rear doesn't have many miles on it. (It's not original to the car.)

I found out why the cover leaked, it had no gasket! That's the third gasket I've found missing on this car since I bought it. I bet I'm missing an intake gasket as well, which would explain the oil leak.

Oh... and now I can add another fluid to my list of things I've used as shampoo. Guess what it is?

Thanks for the help.

you dont need to use a gasket, just use some red silicone

it will last for about a year and half before the oil eats through it and then you should change the fluid anyhow

Not if it is done correctly. Remove all the old sealant & clean both surfaces thoroughly with brakleen or carb cleaner & use GM's RTV part# 12346192 or Permatex black RTV #6BR.

eehhhhhhh......wrong answer.......

i worked at a rear end shop for over 2 years.....after about a year to a year and half, the gear oil will eat through the silicone whether you use the red or the black, the only way it WONT is if you use an actual gasket and they aren't cheap for the 9 bolts

Buy 2 quarts of Redline rear gear oil and you will use 1 1/2 quarts. It already has the additive in it. I did mine two weeks ago and it hasn't leaked yet. The old fluid was Redline and it was still clean after 4 years and 25,000 miles!

BTW, I never use paper gaskets. Even if you use the paper gasket, the oil still eats around the RTV anyways. Use GM intake manifold black RTV. Let it sit for a couple hours before you put the cover on. Then wait another couple of hours before you add the fluid. I recommend getting a screw on spout made for the bottle or just get a turkey baster from WALMART. If not, you'll make a big mess on your floor.

Someone that uses gaskets that are G.M. original equipment. Someone who has been working at the dealership for 7 Years. Someone that knows the differance between a good mechanic, and a SHADE TREE (AKA a Hack).

When I serviced my Diff, it had no leaks, and guess what came out between the cover and the housing, An Original gasket. Guess what went back in between the cover and the housing, A gasket that was ordered from the General. After reinstall and torquing nine bolts to spec, there are no leaks.

What I'm saying is if you want it to last, do it right the first time.

Tell me do you use RTV between the engine block and the cylinder heads?

89ProchargedROC even you yourself, in a prior post, stated to use a gasket to keep it from leaking.

I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers, I'm just stating opinions, if you disagree than state opinions or facts in return.

Hahahahaha. GM didn't even use gaskets from the factory. Mine was sealed with RTV and when the rearend blew up at 35k miles it still had no leaks.

Morley, the first recommended service for a G.M. rear end is at 6k, so someone must have hacked your car!

Here's a little logic:

They make gaskets for it. So obviously one belongs there.

It's been 3 days, including a 10 run day at the strip, and no leaks. And my posi hasn't groaned yet.

Not unless they did it in my garage, I am the one and only owner of this car since 1985.

Oh, and the owner's manual didn't give a reccomendation for servicing the diff.

Silly question maybe, but am I right when I say that there is no fill plug on the pumpkin of my 9-bolt? I just can't seem to locate one. If there isn't one, I take it I should use the rubber plug hole in the diff cover? I'm changing the fluid b4 I put my rear back in.

Also, I'll be using a gasket, too.

Thanks...

Ed

yes , the only place to put the fluid in is the lil plug on the check cover.
as for fluid, i bought 2 bottles of additive and 2 bottles of fluid from GM . i put BOTH bottes of additive in the rear.
i talked to John Heinricy head of F-body last yr at the 35th birthday bash . at that time i talked to him i had a burned up carrier thanx to wal mart and he said use 2 bottles of additive and it should be fine.
he said do 2 bottles when i replace my carrier, and that what i did .
both bottles of fluid and additive filled the pumpkin perfectly all is fine and tight.
